About The Position

The Leidos Defense Electrical Systems Department is seeking a talented Electronics Safety Systems Engineer to design, develop, and qualify high-reliability safety electronics systems for missile range operations, autonomous flight safety systems (AFSS), and firing safety applications. This role focuses on the system development including definition of requirements and requirement flow down to AFSS electronic components — including low-voltage firing sets, initiator safety circuits, interlocks, stimulus sensing, and related protection systems — ensuring compliance with stringent missile range safety standards such as RCC 319 and related requirements. You will work in a fast-paced environment alongside systems, software, hardware development, test engineers, and range operations teams to deliver dependable, fail-safe electronics systems for missile and flight safety applications. The selected candidate will be expected to execute in a fast-paced, small team environment through all phases of the hardware life cycle from conceptual development and detailed design through manufacturing, qualification testing, and post-delivery support. With a product focus, the individual is also expected to actively partner with other engineers, project managers, technicians, and customers to develop solutions that adhere to a diverse set of requirements. The ideal candidate will thrive in a learning environment that encourages leadership and technical growth. Leidos Defense Systems Sector provides a diverse portfolio of systems, solutions, and services covering land, sea, air, space, and cyberspace for customers worldwide. Solutions for Defense include enterprise and mission IT, large-scale intelligence systems, command and control, geospatial and data analytics, cybersecurity, logistics, training, and intelligence analysis and operations support. Our team is solving the world’s toughest security challenges for customers with “can’t fail” missions.

Requirements

  • Candidate must possess a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, or equivalent degree from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • Candidate must have 4+ years of experience and with a Master’s degree at least 2+ years of experience.
  • Strong experience in safety-critical or high-reliability electronics design and/or testing and validation.
  • Ability to interpret/review electrical schematics and mechanical drawings.
  • Demonstrated experience integrating/certifying firing safety electronics, initiator circuits, interlocks, or similar safety systems for flight testing.
  • Solid understanding of grounding, isolation, shielding, bonding, ESD, and EMI protection techniques.
  • Experience with range safety standards, particularly RCC 319 and related requirements.
  • Familiarity with analog circuit function, filtering, sensing, and A/D interfaces in reliability-critical applications.
  • Familiarity with standard electrical test equipment (oscilloscopes, meters, function generators, etc.).
  • Troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced team environment.
  • U.S. Citizenship required (due to the nature of the work); ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance is expected.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, or equivalent degree from an ABET-accredited university.
  • Active DOD S, TS or DOE Q Clearance.
  • Direct experience with missile range safety systems, autonomous flight safety systems, or similar systems and their certification.
  • Experience certifying/qualifying low-voltage firing sets, initiator safety electronics, and reliable stimulus sensing circuits.
  • Experience designing automated or semi-automated test systems for safety electronics boards.
  • Prior work supporting environmental qualification of high-reliability electronics for range or flight safety use.

Responsibilities

  • Ownership of system level design/qualification for an autonomous flight safety system, including providing design requirement guidance to component design engineers, and conducting design reviews with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Develop Flight Safety System design and validation requirements in compliance with various missile range safety standards (RCC 319, etc.).
  • Review the design and development of safety-critical electronics including low-voltage firing sets, initiator safety circuits, power filtering, interlocks, reliable stimulus sensing systems, CDUs, and safety circuits for LEEFI and NSI initiators.
  • Review Flight Safety System component designs and test procedures against requirements. Items may include high reliability analog circuits, filters, protection circuits, sensing circuits, A/D conversion interfaces, and fail-safe architectures, grounding and isolation schemes, EMI/EMC impact analysis and testing.
  • Apply RCC 319 and related range safety standards throughout the design, analysis, and verification process.
  • Support environmental and qualification test requirements of safety electronics, including thermal cycling, shock and vibration, vacuum / pressure testing, salt fog, humidity, pyro-shock, resonant plate / beam testing, acceleration, and EMI/EMC testing.
  • Work effectively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary development environment with evolving priorities and tight schedules.

Benefits

  • Leidos reasonably anticipates that this job requisition will remain open for at least 3 days with an anticipated close date of no earlier than 3 days after the original posting date as listed above.
