About The Position

North Wind Services is actively seeking individuals who can contribute to national security within the science, technology, and engineering fields as part of our supplemental labor team at vital federal research and development installations supporting the Department of Energy. NWS has an established history of contributing to the success of their customer’s mission. Available employment opportunities may range from administrative and logistical support to advanced technical positions. Qualified applicants must be a US citizen, at least 18 years of age, and able to meet pre-employment requirements including any required physical, drug screen, and/or background investigation to satisfy clearance requirements from the Department of Energy. Successful candidates will be employees of NWS, a premier government contractor charged with employing highly motivated and well-qualified personnel who can advance the missions of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, CA. Though employed by NWS, the employee will take day-to-day directions from technical personnel employed directly by the research laboratories. Pay, benefits, Human Resource, and Employment Management functions are provided by NWS. The National Ignition Facility (NIF) has an opening for an Engineering Technician VI to be involved in design, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of various systems used to acquire data on NIF experiments. NIF is the world’s largest and most energetic laser facility ever built. NIF is also the most precise and reproducible laser as well as the largest optical instrument. The giant laser has nearly 40,000 optics, which precisely guide, reflect, amplify, and focus 192 laser beams onto a fusion target about the size of a pencil eraser. Under minimum guidance, the successful candidate will collaborate with scientists, engineers, and top-level technical personnel to provide advanced electronic controls system engineering and maintenance technical expertise. The successful candidate will assess operations efficiency, identify maintenance issues, and contribute to the engineering design and development of new hardware, system upgrades and process enhancements to continually improve system performance and reliability. Due to the vast and varying types of experiments, NIF is a 24/7 operational facility. This position may require the Engineering Technician V / Power Conditioning Systems Operations and Maintenance Tech to have the flexibility to work overtime, shift and or weekends to accomplish goals. This position may also require working alternate schedules such as 4/10’s or 12-hour shifts. The successful candidate will be required to pass various on-site training modules to pursue work assignments.

Requirements

  • BS in Electronic Engineering Technology Technologies or an equivalent combination of 4+ years of education and experience related to the essential skills, knowledge, and abilities below.
  • Advanced skills, knowledge, and abilities in electronics technology including theory, design, and component to system level with the understanding of analog and digital electronics.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience testing high voltage, and pulse power circuitry using accepted engineering practices.
  • Working knowledge of grounding for stored energy capacitor banks, floating decks, and soft grounding principles.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex analytical problems.
  • Experience performing unique fabrication and modification of highly specialized parts and subassemblies.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team, to achieve goals.
  • Identify, analyze, and provide solutions and alternate approaches to complex electronic problems using independent creativity and judgement.
  • Experience making independent, fundamental decisions regarding a variety of technical problems.
  • Experienced in the ability to organize work, handle conflicting tasks, present test results in meetings and report form, and interact effectively with team members, management and suppliers.

Responsibilities

  • Provide advanced electronics technical support for specialized electronics of high current and voltage systems.
  • Operate high voltage equipment and perform measurements on a variety of components and systems.
  • Independently perform experimental tests and measurements.
  • Design, diagnose, troubleshooting, test, evaluate, upgrade, and maintain complex and unique high voltage, high current equipment and systems.
  • Contribute to complex preliminary design concepts and engineering decision process.
  • Provide advanced technical support for experimental work in a specialized R&D facility and analyze complex preliminary data during design or prototyping of components, systems, or equipment.
  • Provide guidance to fabrication support with construction and development of specialized electronics and high current and voltage systems.
  • Maintain, test, calibrate, and repair of advanced electronics circuits, instrumentation and control, as well as diagnostic systems.
  • Interpret and analyze schematics and operating manuals.
  • Maintain a high level of safety awareness, while adhering to written safety procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
