About The Position

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is seeking a skilled and highly motivated professional to join the Traffic Management Division’s Signal Operations Group in Salt Lake City. Our team manages the operation of more than 1,400 traffic signals and integrated devices statewide to ensure the safety and mobility of the traveling public. As an Electronic Technical Specialist II, you will serve in a journey-level capacity performing complex technical tasks. You will be responsible for installing, programming, and troubleshooting traffic signal controllers and sophisticated network systems. Your expertise will directly impact the efficiency of Utah's transportation infrastructure, ensuring that signal timing and operations remain safe and reliable.

Requirements

  • At least two years of professional electrical/electronics work experience or electronics education (or a combination of both).
  • Must hold International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Level I and II certifications.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.
  • Familiarity with electrical systems alongside computer proficiency and programming concepts.
  • Strong proficiency in using computers and specialized software systems.
  • Must be available for scheduled after-hours and on-call duties on a recurring basis. Operating heavy equipment, including bucket trucks, to access signal infrastructure may be required during these times.

Nice To Haves

  • An Associate’s degree or higher in Electrical or Electronic Technology or equivalent experience
  • IMSA Level II (or higher) certification at the time of hire.
  • Four or more years of combined education and professional experience in a related field.
  • Strong computer program skills (Excel/Sheets, basic computer programming skills a plus)

Responsibilities

  • System Programming: Configuring traffic signal controllers to facilitate safe and efficient vehicle flow.
  • Technical Integration: Implementing unique signal configurations and integrating devices into complex communication networks.
  • Detection & Software Management: Configuring software for advanced traffic detection devices and supporting network systems.
  • Diagnostic Troubleshooting: Resolving issues related to signal timing and operations triggered by public reports, equipment damage, or automated system alerts.
  • Data Analysis: Utilizing system data to evaluate the performance of signals and associated hardware.
  • Electrical Maintenance: Wiring and maintaining control equipment and electrical circuits within signal systems.
