Electro/Mechanical Systems Engineer

Cohu•San Diego, CA
•$113,000 - $142,000

About The Position

The Electro/Mechanical Systems Engineer leads module-level development for the EPG team, translating customer and market requirements into robust system concepts that balance performance, reliability, usability, and cost of ownership. The role integrates mechanical, electrical, thermal, and software disciplines into cohesive machine platforms and guides cross-functional teams through structured concept development and decision-making. The engineer evaluates concept feasibility and risk using first-principles physics, analytical modeling, simulation, and empirical methods. The position maintains traceability between requirements and implementation, preserves architectural integrity through the development lifecycle, and drives module development schedules in alignment with program milestones and committed demonstration and ship dates. It also supports customer and stakeholder discussions and compliance with certification requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechatronics, mechanical engineering, or electrical engineering.
  • At least 3 years of experience leading module-level development of complex robotic, electromechanical, or mechatronic systems.
  • At least 3 years of experience as a direct engineer.
  • Proven track record in systems engineering, electromechanical and robotic machine concept development, and cross-discipline electromechanical engineering leadership.
  • Experience with thermal systems, motion control, and sensor integration.
  • Knowledge of risk management, regulatory certification processes, and machine intelligence.
  • Excellent English communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel internationally up to 10%.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to make decisions under ambiguity using physical principles and engineering judgment.
  • Excellent communication and moderation skills to lead interdisciplinary teams through complex trade-offs.
  • Customer-oriented approach and ability to represent the company in technical discussions.

Nice To Haves

  • A master’s degree (MSc, MEng, or equivalent) is desired.
  • Experience in semiconductor backend equipment is ideal.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct module-level requirement analysis and author technical specifications and design briefs for electromechanical, automated, and robotic platforms, machines, and modules.
  • Lead evaluation and selection of technical concepts with domain experts, considering functional, economic, and risk criteria.
  • Ensure architectural consistency and interface compatibility across subsystems and modules.
  • Guide development of subsystem concepts, requirements, and technical interfaces, and validate feasibility through analytical modeling and simulation.
  • Facilitate design reviews and ensure development progress aligns with system-level objectives.
  • Drive risk assessments and initiate pre-development or technology-validation activities as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with certification requirements such as CE, SEMI, and RoHS, and support preparation of documentation.
  • Present technical solutions and resolve module-level issues with customers and stakeholders.
  • Moderate cross-functional concept development workshops and guide structured decision-making under uncertainty.
  • Maintain system-level traceability from requirements to implementation and architectural integrity throughout development.
  • Drive module-level development schedules in alignment with program and project dates and committed demonstration and ship dates.
