About The Position

Under the supervision of the Plant Maintenance Foreman, this position operates with detailed technical skill and expertise in the completion of tasks and ensures that the components of the Authority’s different process controls are operational, servicing the electronic components of monitoring and some of the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system (SCADA), as well as the initial troubleshooting of equipment and services, electrical transmission lines, circuitry, and motors. Must have or obtain within one year, the City of Pittsburgh Master Electrician License.

Requirements

  • Considerable knowledge of the practices of electronics theory and related knowledge to design, build, repair, calibrate and modify electronic components, circuitry, and controls.
  • Ability to diagnose equipment problems and use computer-aided diagnostic equipment.
  • Considerable knowledge of software associated not only with computers but also with peripheral equipment and apparatus that interact with the computer including digital displays, voltage modulators, differential pressure transducers and various other electronic components.
  • Ability to perform electronic repairs to circuit boards and to use computer-aided diagnostic software and/or digital devices and to locate malfunctions.
  • Ability to diagnose problems with electronic circuit boards and their component parts.
  • High level of skill in industrial electronics and test equipment and all peripheral components associated with process and control instrumentation systems.
  • Extensive knowledge of the materials, tools, equipment and procedures of the commercial/industrial electrician trade and of the hazards and safety precautions of the work.
  • Considerable knowledge of the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical and electronic control systems, including solid state circuitry.
  • Considerable knowledge of national and local electrical codes and safety regulations; ability to read drawings on circuits, control devices, printed circuits, and line diagrams; to work in elevated and constricted spaces, and to work outdoors in all weather.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, associates, outside agencies and the general public.
  • Associate degree in Electronics Engineering Technology or a related field.
  • Five (5) years’ experience as an Instrumentation or Electronics Technician, commercial electrician, or industrial electrician.
  • Have or obtain within one year, the City of Pittsburgh Master Electrician License, City of Pittsburgh Master Electrician License preferred.
  • Applicant must present a current, valid Class C (Class 1) Motor Vehicle Operator’s License at the time of application or prior to appointment. A valid driver’s license must be maintained throughout employment.

Responsibilities

  • Designs, tests, calibrates, operates, maintains, and repairs electronic measuring and recording instruments, apparatus and equipment used to monitor and control Authority operations including the water treatment plant, chemical facilities, filtration processes and remote facilities.
  • Calibrates, repairs, and maintains analog, digital control systems, flow meters, and pressure sensors.
  • Identifies problems in the field and makes decisions utilizing independent judgment and analyses.
  • Installs electrical and electronic control systems for the Authority; installs, repairs, maintains and modifies all lighting and power circuits, fixtures, controls, motors, pumps and equipment that is operated from all voltage levels (e.g., signal equipment, pumps, lighting, cranes, instrumentation, etc.)
  • Perform electrical inspections for preventive maintenance; determines type and size wire, conduits, fixtures, boxes, etc., and proper voltage and overload protection necessary; modifies existing circuits, fittings, etc., to accommodate new and modern fixtures, equipment, and controls; lubricates and maintains electrical motors and medium voltage switchgear and related equipment.
  • May install, repair, and maintain solid state circuits to control remote pumps, transmit status and analog data, including chlorine analyzers, turbid meters, level transmitters, rapid sand filter control devices, flow measuring devices Operator Interface Devices, etc.
  • Installs, troubleshoots, and maintains some components of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system (SCADA).
  • Direct the work of lower-level personnel on a project basis.
  • Maintain records, both manually and by computerized and/or automated methods, prepares accurate reports, work orders and correspondence may develop databases and spreadsheets using various software programs (e.g., Windows, Microsoft Office, Excel, Access etc.)
  • May work all shifts, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • May drive Authority vehicle to and from assigned work locations.
  • performs activities and functions of related lower-level personnel as assigned or required.
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned or required.
