About The Position

Howard University Hospital is seeking an Electrician to join our Facilities Management team. In this role, you will perform maintenance and repairs on the Hospital's electrical systems and components up to and including the secondary distribution panel, along with related duties supporting the coordination of electrical and HVAC systems. Your work keeps power, lighting, and signal systems dependable across a 24-hour hospital — directly supporting the clinicians and staff who care for our patients.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Three (3) years of electrical experience.
  • Knowledge of low voltage electrical systems and basic wiring principles.
  • Familiarity with OSHA Standards and the National Electrical Code (NEC).
  • Knowledge of electrical theory and calculations.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings and technical documentation.
  • Ability to apply and adhere to NEC standards and Hospital policies and procedures.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools related to the trade.
  • Proficiency in measuring, cutting, threading, pulling, and installing electrical conduit.
  • Basic computer and math skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with staff, physicians, Hospital and University officials, and the general public.
  • Availability to work days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as scheduled, and to respond to on-call system problems.

Responsibilities

  • Check, test, and repair faulty switches, sockets, and other elements of electrical systems, including lighting fixtures, tubes, and ballasts.
  • Connect wiring to fixtures and power equipment; splice wires as required.
  • Inspect and test electrical lighting, signal, communication, and power circuits and equipment.
  • Mount motors, transformers, and light fixtures into position and complete circuits.
  • Isolate defects in wiring, switches, motors, and other electrical equipment.
  • Measure, cut, thread, and install electrical conduit and armored cable with associated supports and brackets.
  • Respond to on-call system problems.
  • Support the Health Sciences Compliance Program, the Howard University Code of Ethics, and the Health Sciences Standards of Conduct, including HIPAA privacy requirements and the confidentiality of patients, families, and staff.
  • Assume other duties and responsibilities related and appropriate to the position and area.
