About The Position

This is a Fully Qualified Electrician opening located in Hartford, CT. Under general supervision, this role involves inspecting, maintaining, repairing, and operating substations, and performing similar work within the electric system. The position requires performing duties outlined in the Time Merit Progression Program for Electrician, including repairing and maintaining various electrical equipment, installing new equipment, performing electrical tests, and operating substations. The role also includes checking and testing underground systems, reading and interpreting diagrams, making repairs to tools and equipment, and reporting abnormal conditions. The electrician will also be responsible for repairs and replacements of insulators, conductors, transformers, and other associated equipment, making transformer connections, and maintaining rotating equipment. Working on live electrical conductors with proper safety equipment is also a part of the duties. The role involves installing and repairing switchboard wiring, controls, and complicated wiring systems, as well as testing insulators and electrical systems. Rebuilding power circuit breakers, voltage regulators, and transformers, and testing various electrical parameters are key responsibilities. The electrician will also perform routine inspections and maintenance, secondary and primary cable testing, recloser programming, and network testing. Simple electrical calculations and measurements, conduit installation, and basic rigging are also included. A working knowledge of insulating oils and SF6 gas applications, including storage, clean-up, filtering, and testing, is required. The role also involves cleaning and painting structures and equipment, operating motor vehicles safely, and maintaining a clean work environment. Assisting in training electrician helpers, providing substation escorts, and being subject to on-call duty assignments are also part of the role. Keeping substation buildings and grounds in good order, including minor repairs and snow removal, is expected. The position requires working indoors or outdoors as needed, with potential for overtime and storm restoration/emergency assignments.

Requirements

  • Five years' experience in Time Merit Progression program for electrician
  • Must possess a normal degree of dexterity in the use of tools and equipment
  • Must possess a working knowledge of principles involved in the operation of substation equipment
  • Acquires a thorough knowledge and understanding of Employee Safety Manual and performs work in conformance with safe practices and Company standards
  • Thorough technical knowledge of substation, transmission and distribution equipment and systems
  • Understanding of and ability to properly and safely utilize various tools and equipment required to perform assigned tasks
  • Ability to effectively direct the work of others
  • Ability to repair, adjust, install and operate equipment
  • Thorough understanding of safety methods, practices, procedures and policies relating to the construction, testing, operation and maintenance of electrical or electronic equipment
  • Ability to oversee and coordinate work as assigned
  • Knowledge of applicable safety regulations and codes along with construction standards and regulations
  • Working knowledge of construction and maintenance methods and procedures
  • The ability to learn and utilize available information technologies
  • Experience in Energy Delivery, Distribution or Transmission Systems is required
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • New Hires must possess an Electrician E-1 or E-2 license or may also meet this requirement through documented prior experience as a qualified Electrician at another Utility, provided he or she submits all necessary verification of qualification, training and relevant experience

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid CDL license
  • Must obtain and maintain Switching and Tagging certification

  • Regular lifting of 50 lbs. with occasional lifting of heavier equipment including but not limited to test equipment, gas bottles and grounds.
  • The Individual must/or may need to take and successfully pass the Construction and Skilled Trades Test (CAST).

Responsibilities

  • Repairing and maintaining circuit breakers, switchgear, transformers, and similar equipment, including the replacing of sub-assemblies
  • Installing circuit breakers, switchgear, transformers, and similar equipment as directed
  • Making all electrical tests using standard test equipment, including but not limited to carrier and transfer tripping equipment testing and battery testing
  • Performing switching operation involving any voltage
  • Operating substations
  • Checking, inspecting, and testing underground system and maintaining equipment
  • Reading and interpreting wiring diagrams, blueprints, etc.
  • Making repairs to tools and work equipment
  • Recognizing, correcting if possible, and reporting abnormal conditions that develop during the progress of the work
  • Obtaining miscellaneous items from suppliers
  • Repairs or replaces insulators, conductors, transformers, fuses, disconnects and lighting arresters, etc., associated with normal duties
  • Makes standard types of transformer connection
  • Assembles, disassembles, and maintains major rotating equipment such as motors, generators, etc., as required by normal assignment
  • Works on live electrical conductors using proper tools and protective equipment
  • Installs and repairs switchboard wiring and controls, major devices and equipment, complicated wiring, relaying and control circuits, using plans and drawings as required by normal assignment
  • Tests insulators on substation structures Electrical Insulation Systems, Electrical Equipment Operating Parameters, and Distribution System Protective Relays and Devices as required by normal assignment
  • Assembles, disassembles, and rebuilds power circuit breakers, voltage regulators, power transformers, distribution transformers, etc., as required within normal assignment
  • Tests with meggers, Ohmmeters, voltmeters, ammeters, metester and similar instruments and interprets results
  • Testing Contact Resistance for breakers and connections using a DLRO (Ductor)
  • Makes electrical connections on copper or aluminum cable and bus, or between dissimilar materials
  • Installs all types of electrical bus work as required by normal assignment
  • Performs routine inspection, maintenance and adjustments on electrical equipment following manufacturer’s instructions and/or Company procedures
  • Secondary and primary cable testing
  • Recloser programming and network testing
  • Makes simple electrical calculations and measurements
  • Bend and installs conduit
  • Performs simple rigging
