About The Position

Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities involving the layout, installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems, fixtures and related equipment in a state agency or facility. The functions performed in this job family will vary by level, unit and organization, but may include the following: Maintains and repairs electrical equipment in existing buildings; makes inspections and diagnoses electrical troubles; assigns and oversees work details; performs complicated installations, such as repair of laboratory equipment, including centrifuges, sterilizers, stills and medical equipment; performs electrical work on air-conditioning, motor generator units and compressors. Maintains and repairs high voltage distributor transformers and makes internal connections to adjust to the required voltage; installs, splices and insulates high voltage underground and overhead cables; locates and repairs trouble in starter and motor windings, fields, armatures, bearings, brush holders or commutators; tests starters for insulation breakdown, open shorts and wrong connections in windings; makes calculations to determine order of winding, size of wire, span, number of coils, number of turns per coil and manner of connection for use in winding and rewinding armatures; overhauls and repairs complex motors; replaces, repairs or rebuilds motor parts as required. Selects, orders and checks delivered materials for compliance with specifications; advises superiors regarding electrical matters; oversees and instructs electrical apprentices and manual workers; keeps records and prepares reports. Works with consultants, engineers and suppliers on designs, trouble shooting system or equipment and system upgrades. Levels are distinguished based on the complexity of assigned duties, the level of expertise required for completion of work assignments, and the responsibility assigned for the supervision of others. This is the leadership level of this job family where employees are assigned responsibilities involving the design and planning of electrical systems as well as responsibility for supervising the work of others in maintaining and repairing such systems. This will involve overall responsibility for the electrical systems in an assigned agency, facility or designated area.

Requirements

  • active or inactive licensure as an electrical contractor with the Oklahoma Construction Industries Board
  • knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the maintenance and minor repair of electrical fixtures and equipment
  • knowledge of the safety precautions necessary in the electrical trade
  • knowledge of local, state and national electric underwriters’ code for electrical installation
  • knowledge of electrical systems used in new construction
  • knowledge of laws, rules and regulations governing the planning, installation, repair, maintenance and renovation of electrical systems
  • knowledge of supervisory principles and practices
  • Ability to perform minor maintenance and repair of electrical apparatus
  • Ability to keep records and make reports
  • Ability to install maintain, and repair electrical fixtures
  • Ability to make preliminary sketches and develop bills of materials for electrical work
  • Ability to direct non-licensed personnel
  • Ability to perform highly independent work
  • Ability to supervise the work of other electricians
  • valid Oklahoma driver’s license at the time of appointment
  • Some positions may require possession of active licensure within 30 days of appointment
