About The Position

The City of Red Deer is currently recruiting for an Electrician – Treatment Plants (Water) to fill a permanent full-time position. This role is responsible for the maintenance of electrical equipment in compliance with applicable codes, policies, and regulations in an operating industrial facility. The key responsibility is for the continued safe, reliable, and accurate performance and operation of process equipment and electrical assets to ensure compliance with policies and procedures including OH&S, CEC (Canadian Electrical Code) and the City’s Government of Alberta - Approval to Operate.

Requirements

  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Master Journeyperson Electrician Certification (or must achieve their Masters within one year of hire)
  • Minimum of 5 years’ industrial maintenance experience as a certified Journeyperson Electrician, in a Level III or IV Treatment Plant or comparable industrial environment
  • Successfully pass all required safety courses and others to be defined by the province or by the City
  • Ability to work unsupervised and co-operate with colleagues as a team, to understand and follow instructions and to provide guidance and instructions to junior staff.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, property, and business owners/officers, and their representatives.
  • Well-developed verbal, computer, and written communications skills and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Strong computer aptitude including demonstrated proficiency with City based computer programs, databases, spreadsheets, and word-processing software.
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and the ability to accurately work with a wide range of equipment.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license
  • Understand and apply applicable industry best practices (current electrical codes and technology) and The City’s Approval to Operate.
  • Demonstrated safety skills in the use of specialized equipment including respirators and air quality monitors. Work may require the use of harnesses and hoisting equipment.
  • Proficiency with a variety of tools and equipment.

Nice To Haves

  • Having a dual ticket as a Journeyperson Instrumentation and Controls Technician may be considered an asset
  • Fourth 4th Class Power Engineering Certification will be considered an asset

Responsibilities

  • Maintain, repair, calibrate, install, and troubleshoot electrical equipment and systems to ensure reliable plant operations, including medium- and low-voltage systems, motors, generators, PLCs, MCCs, VFDs, UPS systems, HVAC controls, lighting, fire alarm, and security systems.
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute preventive and predictive maintenance activities to maximize equipment life, minimize downtime, and maintain operational efficiency.
  • Coordinate work schedules, staffing, shutdowns, start-ups, inspections, equipment modifications, and emergency repairs while meeting safety, budget, and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide expert technical support to operators, engineers, project coordinators, contractors, suppliers, and maintenance staff for troubleshooting, testing, commissioning, and electrical service work.
  • Coordinate the isolation, installation, removal, testing, and commissioning of electrical equipment and systems, ensuring compliance with engineering standards and codes.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, equipment logs, permits, blueprints, schematics, and asset management data within computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to junior staff, conduct employee orientation, coach team members on equipment operation and maintenance practices, and occasionally act as Maintenance Lead.
  • Promote and enforce safe work practices, participate in safety programs and inspections, conduct hazard assessments, and ensure compliance with Occupational Health & Safety regulations and City policies.
  • Recommend equipment upgrades, support optimization initiatives, assist with design modifications, develop maintenance strategies, and contribute to capital and operational improvement projects.
  • Liaise with internal departments, consultants, vendors, contractors, and plant personnel to provide technical guidance, coordinate work activities, and deliver responsive customer service.
