About The Position

This position supervises the electrical shop within the Facilities and Real Property Management Division of the Public Works Department, overseeing electrical maintenance and repair services for a large portfolio of City-owned facilities—including police stations, fire stations, libraries, community centers, and other municipal buildings. This position supports electrical engineers and project teams on complex repairs, upgrades, and facility improvement projects by providing technical electrical expertise. The role prioritizes preventive maintenance and effective work planning to support safe, reliable facility operations while managing limited resources. Responsibilities include assigning and coordinating work, responding to service requests, and providing customer service to City departments.

Requirements

  • Three years of experience as a journey-level electrician in commercial repair, maintenance, alteration, and construction.
  • Six months of experience in a supervisory capacity.
  • Knowledge of standard practices, processes, methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance, repair, alteration, and improvement of electrical equipment and systems in municipal buildings.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the various trades supervised.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of supervision, training, and performance evaluation.
  • Knowledge of provisions of the most recent electrical code applicable to installation, maintenance, and repair work.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write English at the level necessary for effective job performance.
  • Ability to plan, organize, schedule, coordinate, supervise, and evaluate the work of skilled crafts workers and other employees.
  • Ability to interpret and work from sketches, plans, and specifications and from oral instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communications with employees, other supervisors, management, contractors, and the public.
  • Ability to prepare reports and budgets.
  • Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License at the time of appointment.
  • Reside within thirty-five (35) air miles from the freeway interchange at W-X Streets, 29th-30th Streets within one year following appointment.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, coordinate, and supervise the work of electricians, craft workers and other personnel.
  • Provide technical assistance and recommendations for electrical maintenance, repair, and alteration of City-owned and leased facilities, including but not limited to service panels, load centers, generators, motor's and required controls, lighting systems, and other electrical systems, equipment, and material.
  • Supervise and participate in the installation, maintenance, and repair of police and fire communications systems and equipment, including the repair and replacement of defective underground cables on these systems.
  • Supervise electrical motor work including the installation and lubrication of bearings, replacement of brushes and riggings, repairing controls, switches, and overload relays.
  • Plan, organize, and supervise electrical testing, preventive and corrective maintenance at City facilities including water treatment plants (potable and wastewater), storm and sewer lift stations, reservoirs, and booster stations. Equipment at these facilities consists of motors that operate with motor circuit voltages up to 4,160 volts and power transformers with primary circuit voltages of up to 21,000 volts.
  • Anticipate the need for materials needed by subordinates and order when required. Reorder and keep needed supplies in stock.
  • Check time sheets, mileage sheets, and work reports prepared and submitted by electricians.
  • Operate equipment, used in the construction, alteration, and repair of electrical equipment and parts.
  • Develop preventative maintenance schedules and replacement programs.
  • Prepare and/or obtain estimates for contract maintenance and assigned projects; schedule and inspect performance of the work for both in-house and contract services.
  • Develop safety standards and procedures complying with CAL-OSHA and other authorities.
  • Develop, supervise and implement work plans and work schedules for work units.
  • Collect, maintain, monitor, and utilize a variety of records and information through the use of written and computerized management information systems related to the work and work units assigned.
  • Monitor and provide a variety of reports to track costs, quantities, performance, productivity, work plans and assignments, predictive and preventative maintenance schedules, and associated budgets for work and work units assigned.
  • Coordinate and supervise emergency repairs.
  • Develop and maintain records, drawings, and manuals.
  • Develop operating instructions, safety, and maintenance procedures.
  • Establish and conduct training programs.
  • Evaluate and make recommendations concerning supplies and equipment offered by vendors for possible use in the City.
  • Maintain status of electrical maintenance tasks and projects.
  • Schedule and coordinate work with other sections and divisions.
  • Review project documents prior to construction.
  • Perform related work as required.
