About The Position

Electricians at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) are responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems across a wide range of campus facilities. Their primary goal is to ensure that the campus remains powered, safe, and operates smoothly. The role involves a blend of hands-on troubleshooting, preventive testing, and diagnostic procedures to guarantee reliable and efficient electrical performance. The position is offered at three distinct levels: Electrician I, Electrician II, and Electrician III, each with increasing levels of responsibility, technical knowledge, and supervisory duties. Electrician I operates under direct supervision, Electrician II under general supervision, and Electrician III demonstrates Master Electrician qualifications and is responsible for planning, laying out, and supervising electrical installations.

Requirements

  • Electrician I: Requires State of Iowa Class A or B Journeyman Electrician license
  • Electrician I: Must possess a valid driver's license and meet University's Fleet Safety Program
  • Electrician II: Requires State of Iowa Class A Journeyman Electrician license with at least four years as an apprentice plus two years of experience as a journeyman electrician; or State of Iowa Class B Journeyman Electrician license with eight years in the electrical trade in maintenance or construction
  • Electrician II: Must possess a valid driver's license and meet University's Fleet Safety Program
  • Electrician III: Requires a State of Iowa Class A Master Electrician license with four years as an apprentice plus four years of experience as a journeyman electrician; or State of Iowa Class B Master Electrician license with ten years in the electrical trade in maintenance or construction
  • Electrician III: Must possess a valid driver's license and meet University's Fleet Safety Program

Responsibilities

  • Install electrical systems and equipment (generally less than 600V)
  • Repair electrical systems and equipment (generally less than 600V)
  • Coordinate and accomplish maintenance, operations and modifications (Electrician II)
  • Perform the duties peculiar to, and normally required in, the trade of electrician, following recognized procedures and techniques for such work (Electrician II)
  • Utilize special tools, equipment, and processes (such as insulation testers, thermal imaging cameras and Thermal/Infrared (TIR) Predictive Testing procedures) to collect, perform initial diagnostics, and respond to data through established guidelines for preventive and predictive maintenance to ensure equipment reliability (Electrician II)
  • Properly plan, lay-out, and supervise the installation of electrical wiring, apparatus and equipment for light, heat, power and other purposes (Electrician III)
  • Utilize special equipment, tools and processes (such as power quality analyzers, insulation testers, thermal imaging cameras and Thermal/Infrared (TIR) Predictive Testing procedures) to collect, perform advanced diagnostics, analyze, and respond to data collected through established guidelines and procedures for preventive and predictive maintenance to ensure system reliability and system optimization (Electrician III)
