About The Position

The Electrical Trades Assistant plays a crucial role in maintaining safe work practices and ensuring the quality of electrical installations on vessels. This position involves assisting electricians, learning on-the-job, and adhering to Austal USA's standards and specifications. The role requires a commitment to safety, teamwork, and maintaining an orderly worksite. The assistant will be responsible for learning electrical concepts, cable pulling, and potentially basic welding tasks, contributing to the successful completion of daily assignments and project requirements.

Requirements

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide.
  • Ability to measure using the Metric and English system.
  • The ability to understand directions and follow instructions; both oral and written.
  • Ability to pass mechanical aptitude test.
  • Must obtain and maintain applicable certifications required to perform essential functions.
  • Ability to demonstrate a high level of competency and safe use of all trade-related power tools.
  • Supply own Trade tools to be able to maintain productive output and perform Duties.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older at time of application.
  • Able to provide proof of US Person Status.
  • No felony convictions of Theft/Deception or Violent crimes within seven years from disposition date.
  • No felony convictions of Drug crimes within three years from disposition date.
  • Willing to submit to a drug screen.
  • Willing to submit to a background check.
  • HS Diploma/GED or comparable trade experience; comparable trade experience is defined as 5 or more years of experience working in the applicable trade, 2 years of experience in shipbuilding, or education in the trade comparable to apprenticeship.

Nice To Haves

  • Applicable Trade Technical Diploma/Certificate or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous shipyard experience or experience in a similar industry is preferred.
  • Knowledge of shipyard terminology such as general ship structure and vessel layout preferred.
  • Experience welding preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains overall safe work practices and adheres to safety policies and procedures.
  • Ensures the quality of own work and that correct construction procedures are adhered to in compliance with Austal USA standards and project specifications.
  • Receives and carries out verbal and written instructions.
  • Works as part of a team and within assigned roles.
  • Maintains housekeeping, keeps worksite free of rubbish, and keeps materials and equipment stowed in an orderly manner.
  • Conserves waste of consumables and other materials.
  • Accountable for completion of daily work assignments, including work completion and quality sign-offs.
  • Learns on-the-job as an on-the-job trainee.
  • Assists or works with other trades or Austal USA employees as directed.
  • Monitors working environment for compliance with quality, safety, environmental, and health regulations and reports deficiencies to supervisor.
  • Pulls cable in and outside of vessels, overcoming obstacles.
  • Learns the fundamentals of electrical concepts and practices to perform assigned tasks satisfying budget and schedule requirements.
  • Obtains working knowledge of marine electrical installation of penetrations and packing.
  • Obtains working knowledge of marine electrical installation of cable trays and hangers.
  • Obtains working knowledge of marine electrical cable types and installation methods.
  • Learns the fundamentals of aluminum welding concepts and practices to perform assigned tasks satisfying budget and schedule requirements.
  • Obtains and maintains a B Class CV fillet weld certification in required positions.
