About The Position

Nova Scotia Power is seeking 8 permanent Electrical Technicians to join their Substation Maintenance team. This role involves developing and maintaining a strong working knowledge of substation electrical/electronic equipment, including PLCs, SCADA telemetry, and protection equipment, as well as substation transformers, breakers, reclosers, and switches. The position requires performing installation, commissioning, maintenance, and repair of this equipment on the Transmission/Distribution System. Responsibilities also include assisting with the operation of the NSP electrical transmission system for switching and isolation, potential travel throughout the province for maintenance and restoration, assisting with emergency power restoration, and temporary assignments to other locations. Participation in regulatory and on-the-job training is expected. The role emphasizes personal safety and environmental accountability. A key requirement is residing within 30 minutes of a work location depot, with the expectation of on-call rotation and working outside normal hours or in extreme conditions. This is a safety-sensitive position requiring compliance with the Emera Alcohol and Drug Policy.

Requirements

  • Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology (Power Discipline) with eligibility for membership with TechNova.
  • Three years’ experience maintaining electrical equipment related to substation operations.
  • Proven problem resolution skills and the flexibility and ability to adapt to rescheduled assignments.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Proficient with troubleshooting electrical / electronic equipment.
  • Demonstrated understanding of electrical drawings.
  • Software use and programming in an industrial setting.
  • Strong team player with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong computer aptitude.
  • Ability to deal with multiple tasks and demands.
  • Skills and physical capabilities to perform all duties, including working at considerable heights and within watercourses.
  • Valid Nova Scotia Driver's License with a minimum of two years’ driving experience and provide a driver's abstract satisfactory to NSPI.
  • Willingness to complete the substation electrical technician apprenticeship program within Nova Scotia Power (if no qualified candidates apply).
  • Willingness to participate in on-the-job training or training programs that support the development of additional skills (for apprentices).
  • Must be able to lift 37 lbs. from the floor to shoulder level on an occasional basis and 10 lbs. above shoulder level.
  • Able to carry 37 lbs. with both hands on an occasional basis, with the overall ability to carry 30 lbs.
  • Able to push and pull with upper and whole-body strength on an occasional basis up to 50 lbs.
  • Perform static reaching at waist to shoulder level frequently and from below waist level to overhead on an occasional basis.
  • Perform frequent standing and sitting.
  • Perform occasional bending, stooping, walking and neck flexion, extension, and rotation movements.
  • Perform squatting, kneeling, crouching, and climbing on a minimal basis.
  • Ability to perform fine finger manipulation and possess a simple to firm grasp while performing turning and pinching motions.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain a strong working knowledge of the purpose and operation of all electrical/electronic equipment related to substations, including PLC's, solid state relaying, remote SCADA telemetry and all associated protection equipment.
  • Develop and maintain a strong electrical and mechanical working knowledge of substation transformers, breakers, reclosers, switches, and various other substation equipment.
  • Perform all aspects of installation, commissioning, maintenance and repair of electrical/electronic substation equipment on the Transmission/Distribution System (e.g. reclosers, breakers, transformers, controls, protective relays, telecommunication).
  • Assist with the operation of the NSP electrical transmission system related to switching and isolation of transmission lines for maintenance or other operational requirements.
  • Travel throughout the province for work related to maintenance, reliability and customer restoration.
  • Assist with emergency / storm related power restoration.
  • Be temporarily assigned to other locations to assist other areas when required and will be expected to travel throughout the province.
  • Participate in regulatory training and be willing to participate in on-the-job training or training programs that support the development of additional skills.
  • Be responsible for personal safety and that of co-workers by observing and ensuring compliance with all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations.
  • Be accountable for environmental performance as it relates to the environmental management system processes and initiatives.
  • Primary residence must be located within 30 minutes of the work location Depot, and you will be required to take on call rotation and work other than normal hours and/or in extreme conditions.
  • Develop skills in all aspects of substation maintenance, construction and electrical system operation while ensuring compliance with safe work methods and practices (for apprentices).
  • Complete the theory and practical aspects, as well as a minimum of 6000 hours in the apprenticeship program (for apprentices).
  • Participate in a competency-based training, regulatory training and be willing to participate in on-the-job training or training programs that support the development of additional skills (for apprentices).
  • Be temporarily assigned to multiple locations across Nova Scotia throughout your apprenticeship (for apprentices).
