About The Position

NTH Consultants, Ltd. is seeking an early- to mid-career Electrical Power Systems Engineer for a key position in its newly formed Electrical Engineering Power and Utilities Division. This position is intended to be based out of their Grand Rapids office, with potential for an experienced and independent candidate to work out of their Northville, Livonia, or Lansing offices. This role is not purely desk-based, offering opportunities to visit utility, industrial, renewable, and construction sites for field data collection, testing and commissioning support, electrical system troubleshooting, and observing designs in real-world application. The role is expected to be approximately 80% office-based and 20% field-based, with most travel involving short-term assignments within lower Michigan. This is a ground-floor opportunity to contribute to the development of NTH’s Electrical Engineering Power and Utilities Division, offering broad exposure to design, studies, field investigations, testing, troubleshooting, client interaction, and project delivery across various electrical power projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited 4-year university. Study concentration in electric power, controls, or renewable energy preferred.
  • Strong interest in pursuing professional licensure.
  • Ability to work independently and safely in utility, industrial, and construction environments.
  • Ability to read, understand, and create basic electrical drawings including one-lines, 3-lines, and control schematics.
  • Familiarity with electrical design deliverables including one-lines, schematics, grounding, equipment layouts, and engineering studies.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, ability to work in a team environment as well as independently, demonstrated team-oriented approach to problem-solving, and strong interpersonal skills for contact with clients and fellow engineers/technicians.
  • Accuracy, dependability, and strong organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments at the same time and coordinate tasks with guidance from Senior Staff.
  • Must be able to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Perform job duties in the field and office, during non-standard work hours, as necessary.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license and be willing to travel within the lower peninsula of Michigan.
  • Authorized to work full-time in the U.S.A.

Nice To Haves

  • Michigan PE licensure is a plus.
  • Successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering exam
  • Design or field experience in electrical substations, power plants, renewable energy or industrial facilities. Candidates with strong academic, internship, co-op, military, utility, or field experience will also be considered.
  • Experience with SEL protective relays.
  • Experience modeling electrical systems in ETAP or similar software.
  • Experience with CAD design software.
  • Experience managing small projects.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate effectively with clients in-person, over the telephone, and via written communications to build trust and repeat business.
  • Work safely and follow customer and NTH safety programs in industrial, utility, and construction field environments.
  • Prepare and review contract documents, designs, and specifications for electrical power projects including electrical distribution, electrical substations, electrical generation, and renewable energy.
  • Prepare technical proposals, cost estimates, plans, technical specifications, and reports, including day to day correspondence.
  • Size, specify, and review approvals for a variety of electrical equipment.
  • Perform a variety of engineering analyses, calculations, and modeling with and without the use of engineering software including Load flow, voltage drop, short circuit, protection coordination, arc flash, and grounding.
  • Travel independently to customer sites and provide field engineering services, support, and troubleshooting.
  • Prepare documentation and test reports summarizing electrical testing activities, results, and recommendations.
  • Support electrical CAD design and electrical CAD standards work in a secondary role.
  • Work closely and coordinate design with a multi-disciplinary team of engineers.
  • Support development of design standards and standard operating procedures.
