Electrical or Mechanical Engineering Intern

Overwatch ImagingHood River, OR

About The Position

Overwatch Imaging is an imagery intelligence technology company working to bring sensor autonomy to time-critical airborne search, detection, tracking and monitoring missions. Our Automated Sensor Operator (ASO) software, native to our own line of purpose-built Smart Sensors and as an upgrade for airborne video gimbal platforms, brings Superhuman Vision and Workload Reduction to users of real-time imagery intelligence systems. We fundamentally believe that modern edge processing and AI-enabled autonomy can perform an important set of time-critical imagery intelligence missions better, faster and more safely than humans can alone. Founded in 2016 in Hood River, Oregon, we support private sector companies as well as federal, state and local agencies around the world with missions ranging from wildfire mapping and disaster response to law enforcement, border security, maritime domain awareness and tactical intelligence. About this Role: Overwatch is seeking an intern who will support the design, build, and testing of multi-camera imaging system components and assemblies in support of automated airborne intelligence payloads. The multidisciplinary engineering student will aid in the design and building of motion control elements, electromagnetic and environmental compatibility solutions, manufacturing assembly aids and fixtures, and aircraft integration structures to bring new aerial imaging systems from customer order to fully mission operational.

Requirements

  • Earning a formal education in mechanical, electrical, or aerospace engineering, robotics, optics, or related field.
  • Computer-aided design (Prefer SolidWorks for ME, Altium for EE) and computer-aided simulation for structural and thermal stress analysis and good design practices.
  • Ability to troubleshoot issues, analyze test results, and promptly communicate findings.
  • A high degree of ability to operate machines, hand or power tools.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office tools (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.), data analysis (MATLAB, etc.), and technical report writing.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in aerospace and defense, particularly with mid-sized unmanned aircraft and/or airborne imaging systems is preferred.
  • Experience with electromechanical engineering design, rapid prototyping, and manufacturing customer-facing products is preferred.
  • Rapid prototyping using 3D printers is a plus.
  • Software testing with basic coding experience in C++ or relevant language is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Rapid Prototyping and Design: Contribute to the design and development of dynamic and static assemblies for state-of-the-art aerial imaging systems.
  • Build: Assemble mechanical and electromechanical prototypes with an eye for Size, Weight, and Power.
  • Test: Conduct verification and validation testing and report on newly developed systems including new software packages, hardware, and payload flight testing.
  • Manufacturing Support: Design fixtures and assembly aids that increase production throughput and determine design improvements on payload components and subsystems for manufacturing.

Benefits

  • Growth Opportunities: As a team member of a true startup, you will learn by doing and shape our future. The opportunities are limitless for those who want to grow their career.
  • Impact Opportunity: We work on missions that matter to keep people safe and make the world better, and we do it without bureaucracy at the speed of a startup.
