About The Position

As a Medium Voltage Electrical Lineman, you will support the installation, inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair of electrical equipment in substations and power grid facilities to ensure safe, reliable power delivery. The role focuses initially on basic tasks under direct supervision, working with energized equipment up to 260 volts, and progresses to higher voltages above 750 volts after training. You will assist higher-classified personnel in high- and medium-voltage environments while following strict safety standards. The position combines responsibilities from substation technician and station electrician roles, with an emphasis on hands-on learning and team collaboration. The schedule varies according to site operational needs and requires flexibility for frequent overtime and weekend support. The work may involve exposure to fumes, odors, and noise, and requires adapting to changing responsibilities in a fast-paced environment. Physical demands include working at heights up to 500 feet and in confined spaces, as well as working with high voltage.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate.
  • At least 3 years of experience working as a licensed electrician.
  • Ability to work a variable schedule according to site operational needs, with flexibility for frequent overtime and weekend support.
  • Ability to work in environments with fumes, odors, and noise and to rapidly change roles or responsibilities in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Ability to meet the listed physical requirements, including standing, sitting, pushing or pulling up to 75 pounds, overhead reaching, walking, lifting or carrying up to 50 pounds, climbing, kneeling or crouching, and upper-body twisting.
  • Ability to work in temperatures over 80 degrees for up to 3 hours per day.
  • Ability to safely work at heights up to 500 feet, in confined spaces, and with high voltage.
  • Must meet the stated U.S. export-control eligibility requirements: be a U.S. citizen or national, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee, or be eligible to obtain required U.S. Department of State authorizations.

  • Strong safety focus and attention to detail, with the ability to work independently or in teams.
  • Knowledge of print reading for drawings, manuals, and one-line diagrams.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with installing, inspecting, maintaining, and repairing substation equipment, including breakers, transformers, switches, relays, buswork, control systems, and batteries.
  • Perform routine maintenance on high- and medium-voltage electrical systems, including cleaning, lubrication, and visual inspections of oil levels, lights, heaters, and connections.
  • Conduct entry-level electrical testing using voltmeters, ohmmeters, ammeters, and insulation meggers; assist with insulation resistance, relay, transformer, and circuit breaker tests.
  • Read and interpret basic electrical drawings, one-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, and work orders with guidance.
  • Troubleshoot simple electrical, mechanical, and control-system issues under supervision.
  • Follow lockout/tagout, grounding, clearance, personal protective equipment, and other safety procedures, including emergency rescue techniques.
  • Assist with station switching, de-energizing equipment, placing grounds, and coordinating with operators, engineers, and utility crews during outages or operations.
  • Perform physical tasks such as digging and backfilling trenches; installing conduit, pipe, cable, and wire; uncrating materials; painting structures; climbing ladders and structures; and operating hand and power tools, portable generators, blowers, and pumps.
