Under general supervision, conduct field inspections of assigned construction projects to enforce compliance with municipal, state and national electrical codes and regulations. This role involves conducting on-the-job electrical inspections of assigned new and remodeled sites and structures at different stages of construction. The inspector will review plans and specifications, materials, layouts, and equipment, and perform inspections for compliance with occupational health and safety requirements. A key part of the role is to inform, explain, and interpret electrical code requirements to various stakeholders including project superintendents, foremen, electrical contractors, architects, engineers, and the public, ensuring uniform conformance to electrical codes, standards, and regulations. Difficult or questionable situations are to be referred to a supervisor. The role also includes investigating and responding to complaints regarding illegal construction, safety, or hazardous conditions, and issuing stop orders, corrective actions, or citations as necessary. The inspector may also be required to testify in court and before City boards and Commissions. Additionally, the role involves enforcing municipal and building codes by issuing red tags, stop work orders, corrective action notices, and court citations when construction does not meet electrical codes or plan specifications. Citations not signed by defendants will be referred to the police department for service. The inspector will confer with electrical contractors, issuing verbal and written corrections as needed. During daily inspections, the inspector will investigate to ensure electrical construction is performed by licensed contractors with a city-issued permit and in compliance with requirements, signing and posting permits if construction is in compliance. Maintaining applicable databases, records, and files, researching prior inspections, attending training and meetings, and maintaining certifications are also key responsibilities.
