About The Position

Under general supervision, the Electrical Inspector serves as a member of the Building Safety team, performing, coordinating, and monitoring the workflow of assigned electrical inspections. This position conducts a variety of inspections of residential and commercial buildings and properties to verify compliance with applicable regulations, including, but not limited to, the City of Amarillo Municipal Code, adopted National Electrical Code (NEC), International Code Council (ICC) codes. This position does not supervise other employees.

Requirements

  • Requires a High School Diploma or its equivalent.
  • Must possess a TDLR Journeyman or Masters License.
  • Four (4) years’ experience in the electrical industry.
  • Building construction or inspection experience sufficient to comprehend building plans and maps and be able to translate those to actual site conditions.
  • Experience with codes and knowledge of construction standards.
  • Must obtain the ICC Electrical Residential Inspector (E1) within one (1) year of employment.
  • Must obtain the ICC Residential Mechanical Inspector (M1) within 18 months of employment.
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License required or be able to obtain within 30 days of employment.
  • Must demonstrate strong reading, writing, and verbal communication skills, have the ability to quickly interpret technical information and clearly communicate code requirements, regulations, and procedures to customers, contractors, and colleagues.
  • Proficient in the use of computers, tablets, telephones, copiers, scanners, and other standard office equipment, as well as a variety of software applications necessary to perform assigned duties efficiently and accurately.
  • Must be able to use a measuring tape, level, ladder, various drafting and construction tools, maps, aerial photos, GIS, etc.
  • Must have the ability to locate, interpret, and apply information found in written codes, standards, regulations, and technical reference materials.
  • Must be able to interpret, analyze, and review industrial, commercial, and residential electrical plans to verify compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, and adopted construction standards.
  • Demonstrates consistent knowledge and application of all applicable codes, standards, regulations, and policies, including: (NFPA70) (NEC) National Electrical Code, (NFPA70E) Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace, (NFPA70B) Standard for Electrical Equipment Maintenance, (IRC) International Residential Code, (IBC) International Building Codes, (IECC) International Energy Conservation Codes, (IEEE) institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, (UL) Underwriters Laboratory, (NRTL) Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory, (COA) City of Amarillo adopted codes and ordinances, State of Texas Electrical Licensure laws and administrative rules, City of Amarillo Employee Handbook.

Nice To Haves

  • Three (3) years’ experience with high public contact is preferred.
  • Bilingual in Spanish preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates a commitment to consistently providing courteous, responsive, and professional experience for both external and internal customers.
  • Provides assistance to other Building Safety staff as operational needs require.
  • Conducts field inspections to ensure compliance with City ordinances, adopted codes, and approved construction documents.
  • Documents inspection results, inspection history and understands that all failed inspections require the input of detailed inspection notes referencing specific code sections.
  • Reviews construction documents and plans to verify compliance with applicable City ordinances, adopted codes, and approved design standards.
  • Provides accurate and timely information to the public regarding City policies, ordinances, permitting requirements, and inspection procedures.
  • Assists with responses to inquiries from builders, engineers, contractors, architects, and the general public concerning submittal requirements of code and permit regulations.
  • Investigates complaints and performs inspections to verify compliance with the permitting requirements as adopted into the City of Amarillo Municipal Code and other applicable regulations.
  • Performs other job-related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Strictly adheres to workplace and inspection safety requirements as set forth by the City of Amarillo while performing inspections on residential and/or commercial buildings, mobile homes, signs, and various energized structures.
