About The Position

NTH Consultants, Ltd. is seeking an Electrical Engineering Technician to join its newly formed Electrical Engineering Power and Utilities Division. This position is intended to be based out of their Grand Rapids office, with potential for experienced candidates to work from Northville, Livonia, or Lansing offices. The role is expected to be approximately 60% field work and 40% office work, with travel primarily within lower Michigan. Requirements

  • Associate or Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology. Study concentration in electric power, controls, or renewable energy preferred.
  • Ability to read and understand electrical drawings including one-lines, 3-lines, and control schematics.
  • Confidence in using a multi-meter to troubleshoot basic electrical circuits.
  • Confidence in using basic electrical hand tools.
  • 2+ years of field experience in electrical substations, power plants, or industrial facilities is strongly preferred. Entry level candidates will be considered.
  • Experience with SEL protective relays and/or utility meters is strongly preferred.
  • Experience testing electrical substations or other utility equipment is preferred.
  • Experience modeling electrical systems in ETAP or similar software is preferred.
  • Experience with CAD design software is preferred.
  • Ability to prepare accurate and professional documentation of test results and other engineering documents.
  • Ability to work independently and safely in utility, industrial, and construction environments.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, ability to work in a team environment as well as independently, demonstrated team-oriented approach to problem-solving, and strong interpersonal skills for contact with clients and fellow engineers/technicians.
  • Accuracy, dependability, and strong organizational skills.
  • The ability to manage multiple assignments at any given time and delegate tasks and assignments.
  • Must be able to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • May be required to perform job duties in the field and office, during non-standard work hours, as necessary.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license and be willing to regularly travel within the lower peninsula of Michigan.
  • Authorized to work full-time in the U.S.A.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate effectively with clients in-person, over the telephone, and via written communications to build trust and repeat business.
  • Work safely and follow customer and NTH safety programs in industrial, utility, and construction field environments.
  • Utilize and understand a wide range of electrical test equipment. Maintain NTH owned equipment and requisition rental equipment when required.
  • Travel independently to customer sites and perform field work including: Test and commission electrical utility equipment and systems, Communicate with protective relays and download event reports, Test SEL relays, other protective relays, and electric meters, Connect to and manage export data from power quality meters, Troubleshoot electrical circuits and equipment, Gather data for studies or as requested by Engineers, Use electrical hand tools and perform basic electric controls circuit modifications, Perform testing specifically related to NERC standards, Communicate with and troubleshoot RTUs and PLCs.
  • Prepare documentation and test reports detailing electrical testing.
  • Model electrical and grounding systems for studies in ETAP and other electrical modeling software.
  • Support electrical CAD design and electrical CAD standards work in a secondary role.
  • Support engineering staff with design and study tasks.
  • Work closely and coordinate design with a multi-disciplinary team of engineers.
  • Support development of fieldwork and testing standards.
  • Assist with building electrical prototypes, field tools, and NTH electric lab.
  • Mentor Engineers and Technicians, specifically in regards troubleshooting, testing, field work.
  • Be an early member of the NTH Electrical Division, with high potential for skill and career growth, mentorship, and impact on division culture.
