Electrical Engineering Intern
About The Position
Assist the NTH Electrical Engineering Power & Utilities Division with engineering, design, modeling, testing, commissioning, and field investigation activities supporting electric utility, renewable energy, power generation, industrial, and infrastructure projects throughout Michigan. Unlike many engineering internships that focus solely on office work, this position offers the opportunity to gain both engineering and field experience while working alongside experienced engineers and technicians. Depending on current project needs, interns may be exposed to power generation facilities, battery energy storage systems, substations, utility distribution systems, renewable energy projects, industrial facilities, and construction projects. Duties may include electrical design support, power system modeling, field data collection, electrical testing support, engineering calculations, construction observation, and preparation of technical reports and drawings. NOTE: This is a seasonal on-site position for Summer 2027. Applicants must be located within commuting distance of our Grand Rapids MI office.
Requirements
- Minimum of high school diploma.
- Must be working toward a degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology (or related) discipline.
- Completed sophomore year preferred.
- Interest in electric utility, power generation, renewable energy, industrial power systems, or electrical consulting.
- Willing and able to work on construction sites (Proper safety training will be provided).
- Must have strong written and oral communication skills.
- Be able to work in a team environment as well as independently.
- Demonstrated team-oriented approach to problem-solving.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Accuracy, dependability, and strong organizational skills.
- Ability to organize and prioritize multiple assignments while meeting project deadlines.
- Must be able to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 45 lbs.
- Must hold a valid driver’s license and vehicle insurance, have reliable transportation, and be willing to travel to and conduct field work at various job sites.
- Authorized to work full-time in the U.S.A.
Nice To Haves
- Exposure to AutoCAD, ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, MATLAB, or similar engineering software is preferred but not required.
