About The Position

The Electrical Engineering Intern will join Collins Aerospace’s Resilient Connectivity Products Hardware Department in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for Summer 2027. The intern will work with experienced engineers to design and develop digital hardware for high-performance communication products, including software-defined radios and data links used in ground, airborne, and space applications. The work supports products critical to national defense and takes place in a fast-paced, collaborative team environment. The role offers experience across the circuit-card hardware design lifecycle, from requirements capture and schematic design through printed circuit board layout coordination, testing, verification, integration, and factory transition. The intern will apply academic knowledge to engineering work while learning design documentation practices, signal and power integrity analysis, and hardware test planning. Candidates are expected to be motivated to learn, contribute as team members, and support a positive work environment.

Requirements

  • Be pursuing a bachelor's or advanced degree in Electrical Engineering or a related STEM degree.
  • Remain actively enrolled through completion of the internship/co-op session.
  • Be a U.S. citizen; the posting states U.S. citizenship is required to access information under the program/contract.
  • Be motivated to learn new technologies, work as a strong team player, and contribute to a positive work environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with digital electronics design principles and techniques, such as circuit designs using microprocessors or microcontrollers, DSPs, FPGAs, ADCs, or DACs.
  • Experience working with laboratory equipment such as oscilloscopes and analyzers.
  • Experience with schematic capture tools such as Mentor Graphics DxDesigner, Siemens Xpedition Enterprise, Cadence Allegro, Altium, or KiCad.
  • Experience with signal integrity analysis tools such as HyperLynx for circuit card design.
  • Working knowledge of digital circuit design parameters such as throughput, rise time, clock frequencies, and propagation delay.
  • Knowledge of computer hardware components such as processors, memory, and interfaces, and their characteristics, including throughput, processing architecture, timing, and capacity.

Responsibilities

  • Perform circuit card design lifecycle activities, including requirements capture, schematic capture, and design documentation.
  • Conduct signal integrity analysis and create printed circuit board stackup and routing instructions.
  • Coordinate and review printed wiring board layouts.
  • Create hardware test plans and perform root cause analysis.
  • Create and analyze electrical schematics.
  • Select components needed to implement design requirements.
  • Test and troubleshoot electronic circuitry.
  • Assist with digital hardware factory and field failure root cause analysis.
