About The Position

LCRA is seeking an Electrical Engineer to join its Transmission Protection team. This role involves developing new and revised protective relay settings, ensuring compliance with NERC PRC-027 and other regulatory standards, performing technical studies for generator interconnections, large loads, and distribution systems, and providing technical support for field personnel. The engineer will collaborate with a team to strengthen LCRA's transmission system, supporting capital plan execution and daily operations and maintenance.

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in engineering, engineering technology, engineering physics, biosystems engineering, mathematical science, physical science or related science.
  • Driver's license

Nice To Haves

  • A bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering with a background in power systems
  • Knowledge of symmetrical components used to analyze unbalanced three-phase power systems
  • Experience interpreting electrical design prints (e.g. relay one-line diagrams, DC schematics, etc.)
  • Experience with relay coordination software (e.g. ASPEN OneLiner, CAPE, etc.)
  • Software programming (e.g. Python, VBA, LiveCode, etc.)
  • A passion for solving interesting and complex engineering problems in a collaborative environment, and a desire to learn, grow, and strive for continuous process improvement
  • Knowledge of ERCOT protocols and NERC reliability standards is a plus

Responsibilities

  • Develop new and revised protective relay settings for transmission lines, substation buses, power transformers, autotransformers, capacitor banks, and reactors.
  • Perform PRC-027 wide-area coordination studies, coordinating with other TSPs to ensure protective relay settings are coordinated in the transmission system.
  • Review short-circuit reports for new generation and large load projects seeking to interconnect to LCRA's transmission system.
  • Develop and coordinate transformer protective relay settings with distribution feeder settings.
  • Develop protective relay settings for temporary off-normal switching configurations.
  • Collaborate with other Engineers to update and improve Transmission Protection standards and procedures.
