Electrical Engineer

Formlabs•Boston, MA
•$110,000 - $140,000

About The Position

Formlabs is seeking an Electrical Engineer to design and build prototype and production electronic systems for its 3D printers. The role spans circuit design, PCB layout, bring-up, and validation, with an emphasis on owning projects and shipping products rather than specializing in a single area of electronics engineering. The engineer will also design subsystems such as sensors, actuators, and optoelectronics, balancing electrical and mechanical requirements, and support design decisions with data from simulations and experiments. This is a hands-on, full-stack electrical engineering role involving electronics that interact with the physical world. The engineer will support designs throughout the product life cycle, from early research through debugging field failures, and collaborate on integration across electronics, mechanical designs, and broader systems. Formlabs supports engineers in growing toward deep technical expertise, systems architecture, product technical leadership, or team leadership and management. The role may also involve low-level software development where understanding the physical system helps produce better code. Applicants are asked to include an example of their work with their application.

Requirements

  • Be a generalist in electrical engineering, comfortable with analog and digital design, PCB layout, validation, and debugging techniques.
  • Be comfortable working with electronics that interact with the physical world and integrating electronics with mechanical designs and systems.
  • Be hands-on and interested in supporting designs throughout the product life cycle.
  • Include an example of work with the application.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with embedded software development, such as microcontroller firmware in C or C++, device drivers or board support packages for embedded Linux systems, or C++ application development.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build prototype and production electronic systems, including circuit design, PCB layout, bring-up, and validation.
  • Own projects with a focus on shipping products rather than specializing in only one area of electronics engineering.
  • Design subsystems such as sensors, actuators, and optoelectronics, balancing electrical and mechanical requirements.
  • Support design decisions with data gathered through simulations and experiments.
  • Support designs throughout the product life cycle, from early research to debugging field failures.

Benefits

  • Unlimited 3D printing with any Formlabs material on any Formlabs printer.
  • Equity program through RSUs; every employee receives equity.
  • Healthcare coverage including medical, dental, and vision, with a free employee-only plan effective on the first day of employment.
  • 401K matching with no vesting or tenure requirement.
  • Fully paid parental leave for up to 16 weeks.
  • Flexible time off.
  • Six-week fully paid sabbatical after tenure milestones, with the option to take an additional six weeks.
  • Free on-site parking and pre-tax commuter benefits.
  • Free on-site lunch, snacks, beverages, treats, beer kegs, and local coffee and espresso.
  • Professional development opportunities such as conferences, trade shows, and hackathons.
  • Company activities and events, including monthly socials, an annual weekend summer camp, and a company hackathon.
