Electrical Engineer V/VI - EWIS

Zone 5 Technologies•Fort Worth, TX

About The Position

Zone 5 Technologies is hiring a senior-level individual contributor to lead the design, development, and production support of Electrical Wiring Interconnection Systems (EWIS) for UAS and air-launched weapon platforms. The role owns harness architecture from schematic through installation, ensuring wiring systems are safe, reliable, manufacturable, and compliant with aerospace and military standards. The engineer works closely with production to resolve build issues and mentors other engineers in EWIS best practices. The position includes defining wiring architecture; creating electrical and harness design documentation; coordinating 3D harness integration with Mechanical Engineering; supporting manufacturing, verification, and qualification testing; and maintaining configuration-controlled documentation. The role also coordinates with EMI/EMC engineering and helps transition designs from prototype to production.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • 10 or more years of experience in aircraft, missile, or aerospace wiring and harness design, including significant production support experience.
  • Expert knowledge of SAE AS50881 and military wire, cable, and connector specifications, such as M22759, M27500, and MIL-DTL-38999.
  • Proficiency with electrical and harness CAD tools, such as Altium, SolidWorks Electrical, Siemens Capital, or Zuken E3.series.
  • Strong understanding of power distribution, signal integrity, shielding, and bonding and grounding.
  • Proven ability to close nonconformance issues and drive corrective action in a production environment.
  • Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration abilities.
  • U.S. Person status due to export control regulations.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with weapon and store interfaces, such as MIL-STD-1760, and avionics data buses, including MIL-STD-1553, CAN, and Ethernet.
  • Familiarity with IPC/WHMA-A-620 and J-STD-001 workmanship standards.
  • Familiarity with DO-160 and MIL-STD-704.
  • Experience transitioning designs from prototype to rate production.
  • Active U.S. security clearance or ability to obtain one.

Responsibilities

  • Define and own wiring interconnect architecture, including wire and connector selection, routing, separation, segregation, shielding, and bonding and grounding schemes.
  • Create and maintain wire lists, pin-outs, schematics, harness drawings, and formboard layouts using electrical CAD tools.
  • Collaborate with Mechanical Engineering to route harnesses in 3D models, define clamping and support, and ensure installation clearance and maintainability.
  • Ensure designs comply with SAE AS50881 and applicable military specifications for wire, cable, connectors, and protective materials.
  • Serve as the primary engineering interface to harness manufacturing; resolve build issues, disposition nonconformances, and support Material Review Board activities.
  • Drive designs for manufacturability that reduce build time, rework, and cost while maintaining reliability.
  • Define harness acceptance test requirements, including continuity, hi-pot, and insulation resistance, and support integration and qualification testing.
  • Coordinate with EMI/EMC engineering on shielding, filtering, and grounding approaches to meet MIL-STD-461 and MIL-STD-464 requirements.
  • Maintain EWIS documentation and drawing packages under configuration control and drive engineering change orders through implementation.
  • Train and mentor junior engineers and technicians in EWIS design and harness fabrication practices.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive benefit package options, including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance.
  • 401(k) with company match.
  • Three weeks of paid time off each year.
