Electrical Engineer, Rack Power Distribution

General Matter•Los Angeles, CA
•$170,000 - $250,000

About The Position

General Matter is hiring an Electrical Engineer to own rack-level power distribution for high-density computing infrastructure supporting its uranium enrichment facilities. The role defines how power flows from facility tap-offs to server power supplies and serves as the technical authority for rack power and the interface between facility electrical and IT hardware teams. It is a hands-on design role involving design, testing, troubleshooting, and implementation of rack power systems for high-impact projects. The engineer will develop end-to-end rack power architectures for high-density AI/GPU and HPC deployments, including 48V/54V busbars and liquid-cooled configurations. The role includes selecting and specifying power equipment, producing rack layouts and load schedules, analyzing electrical performance and safety, coordinating with vendors and cross-functional teams, leading testing and commissioning, integrating rack monitoring with DCIM, and preparing designs for formal engineering review and change control. The position requires compliance with applicable electrical codes and equipment listing requirements. The role requires a U.S. person who can obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance. Extended hours and weekend work may be necessary. The base salary range is $170,000–$250,000 annually. Full-time hires may be eligible for stock options and medical, vision, and dental coverage, as well as access to a 401(k) plan.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field.
  • At least 5 years of electrical design experience, including at least 3 years designing rack- and server-level power distribution for data center or hyperscale deployments.
  • Direct design experience with rack PDUs, in-rack busbars, power shelves, or server power delivery; facility-level MEP design alone is insufficient.
  • Strong command of A/B redundancy, phase balancing, branch circuit sizing, inrush, and PSU redundancy behavior.
  • Experience taking rack power designs through testing, integration, or commissioning.
  • Proficiency producing rack elevations, load schedules, and one-line diagrams using AutoCAD, Revit, Visio, or similar tools.
  • Must be a U.S. person for export control purposes and able to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance.
  • Ability to work extended hours and weekends as necessary.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with high-density AI/GPU racks such as NVIDIA GB200/GB300 NVL72, MGX, or comparable platforms.
  • Experience with OCP Open Rack (ORv3), 48V/54V busbar, BBU systems, or emerging higher-voltage DC rack architectures.
  • Liquid-cooled rack integration experience, including power and cooling interfaces and CDU and manifold coordination.
  • Background on a hyperscaler hardware team, AI rack integrator, ODM, or rack PDU or power shelf manufacturer.
  • Familiarity with facility-side distribution such as busway, RPPs, and UPS, and power system tools such as ETAP, SKM, or EasyPower.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Experience in a regulated industry such as nuclear, aerospace, defense, or pharma, with formal design control or QA programs.

Responsibilities

  • Own rack power architecture from busway tap-off or RPP through rack PDUs, in-rack busbars, and power shelves to server PSUs.
  • Define rack power topologies for high-density AI/GPU and HPC deployments, including 48V/54V busbar and liquid-cooled configurations.
  • Set rack-level redundancy strategies, including A/B feeds and PSU N+1 and N+N, and verify failure-mode loading under single-feed operation.
  • Select and specify rack PDUs, power shelves, BBUs, power cords, and whips.
  • Produce rack elevations with power assignments, outlet-level load schedules, and phase-balance calculations.
  • Analyze inrush current, hold-up time, breaker coordination, voltage drop, and connector and busbar thermal loading.
  • Size branch circuits, tap-offs, and RPP circuits feeding each rack, and set derating and power-capping strategies for variable GPU workloads.
  • Work with server OEMs, ODMs, and PDU and power shelf vendors on design reviews, submittals, and technical issues.
  • Coordinate with facility electrical, mechanical/liquid cooling, controls, and IT hardware teams to resolve rack-to-facility interface issues.
  • Lead rack power validation through lab testing, factory integration, and on-site commissioning, and investigate root causes of power issues.
  • Integrate rack power monitoring, including intelligent PDUs and branch circuit monitoring, with DCIM.
  • Prepare design packages for formal engineering review, configuration management, and change control.
  • Ensure compliance with NEC (NFPA 70), NFPA 70E, NFPA 75, applicable IEEE standards, and UL/IEC listing requirements for rack equipment.

Benefits

  • Eligible full-time hires may receive long-term incentives in the form of stock options.
  • Access to medical coverage.
  • Access to vision coverage.
  • Access to dental coverage.
  • Access to a 401(k) retirement plan.
