About The Position

The TD Transmission & Distribution Engineering department is establishing an External Applicant Pool for future Electrical Engineer opportunities on Oahu. Qualified applicants may be invited to apply as positions become available. Interested candidates are encouraged to apply through this applicant pool. This role performs design, project engineering, project management, and general engineering duties in support of the capital construction programs of Hawaiian Electric. The engineer will independently evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria, using judgment for minor adaptations and modifications. Assignments have clear objectives and require investigation of a limited number of variables. The engineer will receive instruction on specific assignment objectives and complex features, with assistance provided for unusual problems. Work is reviewed for the application of sound professional judgment.

Requirements

  • A BS degree in engineering in a discipline relevant to the Department from an accredited engineering school.
  • Thorough knowledge of the theories and principles of engineering acquired through advanced college level courses or equivalent experience.
  • Working knowledge of the principles and practices of engineering design, project engineering, project management, and construction methods associated with electric utility facilities, normally acquired through a minimum of 3 years’ relevant engineering experience.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers and related software applications such as spreadsheets and word processing, and ability to learn additional software tools to perform work.
  • Working knowledge of LEAN continuous improvement principles and best practices to achieve operational excellence.
  • Working knowledge of SafeStart principles and best practices to achieve a safe workplace environment.
  • Good leadership skills including effective written, oral, and listening communication skills and interpersonal skills, in order to work effectively with all levels of the company, with outside contractors and consultants, governmental agencies, community groups, and customers.
  • Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to handle confrontational, difficult, and/or sensitive issues with professionalism, tact, courtesy, and discretion.
  • Ability to perform in-depth analytical and administrative tasks such as preparing and monitoring project requirements and resolving cost and time constraints, and conflicting priorities.
  • Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver’s license.
  • Must meet the standards for driving positions stated in the Hiring Standards for Driving Positions policy.
  • Experience in the design of additions, modifications, extensions, upgrades, and rearrangements of company generation, transmission, substation, and communication and control systems and facilities.
  • Experience must be in a specific and relevant area of expertise.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares plans, layouts, design calculations, and related engineering design in accordance with applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Conducts project design and cost alternative studies, field inspections, and prepares associated reports.
  • Prepares and manages cost estimates, budgets, schedules, material and construction specifications, and construction contracts for assigned projects.
  • Performs project engineering and project management functions for assigned projects.
  • Coordinates work by consulting engineers, evaluates proposals and bids for engineering services and equipment, and makes recommendations.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.
  • Understands and follows the Company’s Policies, Mission, Vision, Values, and culture dimensions to ensure the success of the company.
