Electrical Engineer - Consumer Electronics

DoorDash•San Francisco, CA
•$170,000 - $250,000

About The Position

DoorDash Labs is DoorDash’s innovation hub, developing automation and robotics solutions to improve last-mile logistics and support Dashers, merchants, and consumers. The team focuses on business impact and consists of senior members with experience across robotics industries. DoorDash is seeking a senior/staff electrical and firmware engineer to design boards and write firmware for connected consumer and enterprise devices, including tablets, POS systems, peripherals, and emerging robotics applications. The role takes products from ambiguous user or business needs through architecture, prototyping, board design, firmware implementation, bring-up, field deployment, and production transition. It is a hands-on, build-heavy position on a small, senior team, spanning hardware and firmware across multiple programs. The successful candidate will own connected devices end to end, develop integrated electrical and firmware architectures, and make tradeoffs among speed, reliability, cost, manufacturability, and user experience. The work may include merchant-facing hardware and automation or robotics efforts as business needs evolve. The role requires independent judgment and decision-making within assigned responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • 8+ years of hands-on product-development experience spanning electrical hardware and embedded firmware.
  • Experience taking customer-facing or field-deployed hardware from early concept through production and scaling designs beyond initial deployments.
  • Personally designed a board and written its production firmware for the same product.
  • Hands-on depth in compute-based board design, embedded C/C++, board bring-up, and hardware debugging.
  • Ability to independently develop system architecture from incomplete requirements.
  • Sufficient experience across power, wireless, sensors, and interfaces to lead the whole electrical system.
  • Comfort regularly exercising discretion and independent judgment, evaluating options, making informed decisions, and determining appropriate courses of action within assigned responsibilities.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience developing tablets, POS systems, or other connected consumer or enterprise devices.
  • Experience with regulatory compliance and certification processes, such as FCC and CE.
  • Exposure to electromechanical or robotics systems.
  • Experience shipping hardware at scale in customer-facing products.
  • Personal engineering projects demonstrating hands-on engineering interest.
  • Experience working with in-house and contract manufacturing teams.
  • Thrives in high-integrity, fast-paced, high-ownership environments and cares deeply about craftsmanship.
  • Strong sense of ownership.

Responsibilities

  • Own connected devices from ambiguous product needs through field deployment.
  • Translate user and business needs into integrated electrical and firmware architectures.
  • Design compute-based, mixed-signal boards incorporating processors, power systems, sensors, wireless connectivity, displays, and peripherals.
  • Develop embedded firmware, choosing bare metal, FreeRTOS, embedded Linux, or Android according to product needs.
  • Lead board bring-up, validation, and troubleshooting with laboratory tools.
  • Prototype with new sensors and conduct experiments to evaluate whether useful, reliable signals can be extracted.
  • Own the electrical hardware lifecycle from concept and schematic capture through layout review, bring-up, validation, certification, and production handoff.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, software, product, and operations partners, balancing speed, reliability, cost, manufacturability, and user experience.
  • Contribute across multiple programs, including merchant-facing hardware and emerging automation or robotics efforts.
  • Explore uncertain product ideas through rapid prototypes and experiments, and make tradeoffs on a small, senior team with exposure to users and field behavior.
