Electrical Engineer

Generalist•Somerville, MA

About The Position

Generalist builds embodied foundation models for the physical world, with a focus on dexterity. The company combines AI and robotics to enable robots to interact intelligently with the world. In this full-stack electrical engineering role, you will own robot electrical systems end to end, from initial concepts through design, bring-up, validation, and production. You will develop custom hardware for cameras, sensors, and motor control, and may prototype sensor modules and motor controls, debug signal integrity, write microcontroller firmware, coordinate design-for-manufacturing and certification with manufacturing partners, and deploy hardware revisions to the robot fleet. You will work closely with mechanical engineers on packaging, thermal design, and integration, and with software engineers on drivers, interfaces, and system performance. The role also involves collaboration with machine learning engineers on system architecture and the effects of hardware choices on model performance.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience shipping complex electronics products.
  • Demonstrated full-stack electrical engineering ownership, taking ideas from concept to production.
  • Experience with highly integrated SoC-based designs, such as Qualcomm, NXP i.MX, or Ambarella, including high-speed interfaces such as MIPI CSI/DSI, USB 3.x, or PCIe.
  • Deep experience in one or more of the following: imaging systems, including image sensor selection, ISP tuning, and frame synchronization; or motor control, including BLDC drivers, current sensing, and encoders.
  • Ability to work across system architecture and hands-on bench work, including soldering and rework, measuring timing delays with an oscilloscope, and testing hardware in a live system.
  • Experience managing external suppliers, design partners, and contract manufacturers or JDMs, including schedule planning, materials sourcing, and production ramp.

Responsibilities

  • Own electrical designs throughout the full lifecycle, including concept development, architecture, schematic capture, PCB layout, fabrication, bring-up, validation, and scaled production.
  • Design low-latency, high-fidelity, robust sensing and motor-control electronics for robot systems, including industrial interfaces such as RS-485 and CAN.
  • Design multi-sensor architectures that interface with highly integrated, latest-generation SoCs.
  • Architect power delivery systems with complex power trees and sources such as 802.3bt, USB-C PD, and LiPo.
  • Develop battery-charging and power-path management within tight power and thermal budgets in compact enclosures.
  • Write and debug embedded firmware in C, C++, or Rust on microcontrollers, or low-level Linux device drivers for bring-up, test, and production.
  • Partner with mechanical engineers on enclosure integration, thermal design, connector selection and placement, and cabling.
  • Drive designs to production, including DFM and DFT, EMC and regulatory certification, test-fixture development, and manufacturing ramp with in-house resources, external design partners, or contract manufacturers.
  • Manage hardware rollout to the robot fleet.
