About The Position

VIAVI Solutions is an industry leader in thin film coatings, optical products, specialty pigments, and vacuum technology. We're looking for an Electrical Engineer to join our Equipment Engineering team — the group that designs, develops, and continuously improves the production optical coating equipment that powers our business. You'll own electrical designs from concept through commissioning, work hands-on with advanced coating systems and precision electro-mechanical assemblies, and partner closely with Operations and Maintenance to keep production running at its best.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience designing precision electro-mechanical systems.
  • Working knowledge of NFPA 70 (National Electric Code), NFPA 79 (Electrical Standard for Industrial Machinery), and NFPA 70E (Electrical Safety in the Workplace).
  • Proficiency in electrical schematic design software — SolidWorks Electrical, Promis.e, or equivalent — for the design of electrical distribution and control systems on industrial machinery.
  • Familiarity with PLC and HMI programming, including ladder logic, for troubleshooting and process control.
  • Strong analytical skills with a methodical approach to root cause analysis and corrective action.
  • Effective communicator with the ability to lead projects, contribute as a team member, and present technical findings clearly to cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver on schedule.
  • Ability to work in an ITAR setting, and be a US Person as set by USCIS.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop new electrical and electronic hardware for large-scale optical coating equipment, from schematics through final documentation.
  • Create and maintain detailed electrical documentation — including schematics, assemblies, BOMs, and CAD files — ensuring records are accurate and up to date.
  • Manage equipment installations, qualifications, commissioning, and acceptance testing for new and upgraded electronic systems.
  • Select components and equipment by analyzing specifications, assessing vendor capabilities, and evaluating reliability to support system upgrades.
  • Troubleshoot electrical, electronic, and electro-mechanical issues on production equipment; drive corrective design changes to prevent recurrence.
  • Conduct experimental tests, analyze equipment operating data, and evaluate results to inform design decisions.
  • Provide production support to Operations teams, including some off-hours availability, to ensure maximum equipment uptime.
  • Collaborate across Operations, Maintenance, and Engineering teams on complex technical challenges.
  • Support modest domestic and international travel for equipment installations and operational support at VIAVI facilities worldwide.

Benefits

  • paid time off
  • health, life and disability insurance
  • 401(k)
  • bonus program
