About The Position

Sierra Lobo is hiring an Electrical Engineer to support the Center Maintenance, Operations, and Engineering Contract (CMOE) at NASA’s Langley Research Center. The role is part of the Maintenance Operations team and reports directly to the Maintenance and Reliability Engineer Manager. The engineer will support the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of electrical systems across the center, improve equipment reliability, reduce downtime, and provide technical guidance to maintenance teams. Work must be performed with a high level of quality and professionalism and in full adherence to safety policies and procedures. The position supports troubleshooting, failure analysis, maintenance strategy development, procedure updates, equipment repairs, upgrades, capital projects, commissioning, and continuous improvement. The engineer will collaborate with reliability, mechanical, and operations teams and ensure electrical systems meet applicable codes, standards, safety requirements, and operational needs. The work environment is described as 45% office, 45% test environment, and 10% travel between facilities and test operations. Test environments may involve high noise levels, hazardous propellants, chemicals, and industrial facilities. Physical requirements include mobility throughout test facilities, including climbing, crawling, entering confined spaces, working at elevated levels, and lifting up to 35 pounds. Overtime or work outside the normal schedule is required less than 10% of the time.

Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
  • A bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or an appropriate discipline and 2–5 years of related engineering experience; or a master’s degree and 1–3 years of related engineering experience; or a Ph.D. and 0–1 year of experience from an accredited engineering school.
  • Working knowledge of maintenance and reliability requirements for mechanical systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and identify failure causes for mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge of failure analysis, including evidence preservation techniques.
  • Knowledge of Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) and Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA).
  • Knowledge of engineering design standards and their application.
  • Ability to complete and maintain a NASA background check.
  • A valid driver’s license.
  • Sufficient mobility to enter all areas of test facilities, including crawling, climbing ladders, entering confined spaces, and working at elevated levels on platforms and scaffolding.
  • Ability to walk, stand, bend, twist, and sit for extended periods, as well as climb, crawl, and lift up to 35 pounds.
  • Regular attendance is mandatory.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a utility or research environment.
  • Familiarity with CMMS systems and asset management tools, specifically IBM Maximo.
  • Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional (CMRP) certification; reliability engineers are encouraged to obtain it.

Responsibilities

  • Support maintenance and operations teams in troubleshooting and resolving electrical, power distribution, control, and instrumentation system issues under normal and emergent conditions.
  • Analyze equipment failures and recurring issues, lead root cause analyses, and develop corrective and preventive actions.
  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve preventive and predictive maintenance strategies for electrical assets, including motors, drives, switchgear, controls, and related systems.
  • Review, create, and update electrical job plans, maintenance procedures, and preventive maintenance tasks to improve safety, efficiency, and reliability.
  • Provide electrical engineering support for equipment repairs, system upgrades, and capital improvement projects from design through execution.
  • Identify equipment reliability risks and obsolescence concerns, and recommend design changes, process improvements, or replacement strategies.
  • Support commissioning, testing, and turnover of new or modified electrical systems, ensuring systems meet design intent and operational requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable electrical codes, industry standards, and site safety requirements, including supporting audits and inspections.
  • Collaborate with reliability, mechanical, and operations teams to drive continuous improvement initiatives and support reliability-centered maintenance efforts.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to maintenance personnel as needed.
