Electrical Engineer

PROPWR•Houston, TX

About The Position

The Electrical Engineer at PROPWR is a member of the PWRLIVE Center, PROPWR’s real-time engineering, field engineering, and asset reliability team. The role focuses on supporting the PWRLIVE Center during power system faults and events, protective relay coordination, and electrical troubleshooting for power generation and distribution equipment. The engineer analyzes relay event records and system data to determine root causes, guides field personnel through electrical troubleshooting, and drives corrective actions to improve asset reliability. The role also supports the design, integration, and testing of electrical equipment at system and subsystem levels, including troubleshooting documentation, integration drawings, and pre-installation testing. The engineer provides real-time and remote troubleshooting support, analyzes faults and abnormal operating events, develops and maintains protective relay settings and logic, performs protection coordination and fault current studies, and supports relay testing and commissioning. The role includes leading root cause analyses, documenting findings, tracking corrective actions, identifying reliability trends, maintaining technical resources, and providing training and guidance to field and PWRLIVE Center personnel. The position also supports equipment systems design, integration, testing, commissioning, and broader power systems engineering projects. It involves developing and updating equipment procedures and electrical diagrams, assisting with medium-voltage cable assembly design, collaborating with vendors and internal stakeholders, identifying technical risks, and complying with HSE policies and required safety practices. Travel within the Permian Basin (West Texas and Southeast New Mexico) may be needed.

  • Proficiency with Visio, SmartDraw, or similar diagramming tools; familiarity with electrical CAD software.

Responsibilities

  • Provide real-time and remote electrical troubleshooting support to field personnel for in-service generation and electrical equipment.
  • Analyze faults, trips, and abnormal operating events using relay event reports, oscillography, sequence-of-events records, and SCADA or historian data to determine root causes and recommend corrective actions.
  • Develop, review, and maintain protective relay settings and logic for generator, transformer, feeder, and bus protection.
  • Perform and maintain protection coordination studies, including time-current curves.
  • Perform short-circuit and fault current calculations, verify equipment ratings, and support arc flash studies as needed.
  • Support relay testing and commissioning, including settings verification, secondary injection testing, and review of test results.
  • Lead and support root cause analyses for electrical failures and recurring events; document findings and track corrective actions through closure.
  • Identify trends in electrical events and equipment performance and recommend improvements to protection schemes, settings, and operating practices.
  • Develop and maintain PWRLIVE Center troubleshooting guides, decision trees, fault and event analysis reports, relay settings records, protection documentation, lessons learned, and technical bulletins.
  • Provide training and technical guidance to field and PWRLIVE Center personnel on protective relaying, fault response, and electrical troubleshooting practices.
  • Support systems design, integration, testing, and commissioning of equipment at system and subsystem levels.
