Electrical Engineer

ebm-papst Inc.Farmington, CT

About The Position

Ebm-papst Inc. is seeking experienced electrical engineers to join the Electrical Engineering R&D department to develop advanced control electronics for electronically commutated 3 core BLDC motors up to 20 KW. These motors are used for driving industrial fans and blowers in multiple market sectors. The US R&D departments are growing to become a local design center for the Americas. This candidate will be a motivated EE department team member, interfacing with mechanical, motor, airflow, and applications engineers locally, and in collaboration with engineering departments in the German divisions. The responsibilities involve multiple aspects of the design, including motor power electronics for up to 575 VAC, 3 phase power, power factor correction, winding drive circuits, EMC, serial, and network communications, SMPS, microcontrollers, firmware, analog & digital interfaces, and testing.

Requirements

  • Minimum education: bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering
  • Minimum relevant circuit design experience: 1 year (or Co-op) and up

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with regulatory safety and EMC standards for industrial and residential applications (UL, FCC, NEBS, IEC, etc.)

Responsibilities

  • Design power circuits including IGBT bridge and driver circuits for voltages up to rectified 575 VAC 3 phase power, with attention to materials and spacing requirements for circuit board layout.
  • Design switch mode power supplies, analyzing system power requirements and potential transients/anomalies of mains power using LTspice for simulation.
  • Select appropriate microcontrollers for applications, primarily using Microchip Technology and Arm Core controllers.
  • Develop software in C for embedded controls and PC software tools with Visual Studio, including functions for serial and network communications, internal status monitoring, failure logging, and closed-loop controls.
  • Develop test fixtures and procedures for evaluating electronics' accuracy, robustness, and reliability, including hardware and software for test conditions and data logging.
  • Perform circuit analysis including reliability, component derating, thermal, and component stress, using data for design reviews, verification, and FMEA.
  • Track compliance testing progress, investigate non-compliance issues, and stay familiar with regulatory safety and EMC standards (UL, FCC, NEBS, IEC, etc.).
  • Collaborate with a project team including PCB design engineers, local and global electrical engineers, project managers, applications engineers, mechanical engineers, and manufacturing engineers.
  • Participate in product development from conceptualization to production, understanding EMS, mechanical, production, thermal, and airflow issues.
  • Communicate effectively with team members to keep them informed and projects progressing, and listen to understand issues.
  • Collaborate with other US locations and German divisions, potentially requiring travel for meetings and training.
  • Plan and track project development, tasks, and schedules, and estimate project efforts.
  • Demonstrate self-motivation for learning and understanding areas of expertise for growth and professional development.
