About The Position

This role sits within the Continuous Monitoring Operations team, which operates under the Asset Performance organization and is responsible for piloting and deploying new technologies related to sensors and machine learning. The team focuses on analyzing sensor data — including smart meter data — and applying machine learning models drawn from the grid to identify problems, determine their origin, and trigger investigations in the field. The team consists of approximately 55 people and works at the intersection of traditional energy infrastructure and emerging data-driven, AI-enabled solutions.

Requirements

  • Strong analytical skills and knowledge of distribution engineering
  • Familiarity with electric distribution line equipment, protective device settings, electric distribution operations, and distribution power flow analysis
  • Understanding of how the electric grid works; strong electrical engineering fundamentals
  • Investigative mindset and intellectual curiosity — driven to understand why issues occur
  • Ability to learn new tools quickly; software-savvy
  • Clear communication skills
  • Experience working with large datasets (e.g., historical defect data, inspection records, and operational data)
  • Experience collaborating with field operations, Protection & Control, and engineering teams
  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering required
  • 0–5 years of experience; recent graduates with strong power systems fundamentals will be considered
  • Experience with power systems is the core focus — candidates with up to 5 years of experience preferred; candidates with 10 or more years of experience will not be considered
  • Candidates must be local to the San Ramon, CA area.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret Smart Meter data and predictive alerts, translating results into actionable insights for field operations and asset management teams to predict and prioritize transformer defects and overhead/underground electrical line defects.
  • Work with large datasets (e.g., historical defect data, inspection records, and operational data) to improve model accuracy and reduce false positives.
  • Collaborate with field operations, Protection & Control, and engineering teams to validate machine learning-driven predictions.
  • Analyze sensor data from the grid to identify what problems are occurring and where they originate.
  • Support the investigation and triage of alerts generated by sensors and ML tools to determine grid issues and escalate for field investigation.
  • Apply thorough investigative skills to understand the root cause of anomalies and failures in distribution infrastructure.

Benefits

  • Mileage/travel required outside of the primary work location may be submitted for reimbursement.
  • Expenses for PPE may be submitted for reimbursement with prior manager approval.
  • Client laptop will be provided; in the event of delays, the supplier is expected to provide or help in providing a device to begin the assignment; extra monitors and docking station must be vendor-provided or personal.
