Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, focused in Electronics (Masters preferred)
  • At least 4-5 years of experience
  • Ability to independently create electronics hardware designs.
  • Ability to independently create microprocessor firmware/code
  • Four years of applicable experience in Electronics and Firmware Engineering Design, with ability to share specifics of personal work on Electronics/Firmware with data-driven selection and solutions of high-quality electronics systems.
  • Proficient use of schematic capture and PCB layout tools, CAD(2D), Microsoft Office365 programs, MiniTab, SPICE, Circuit analysis tools.
  • PCB design using Altium Designer.
  • Ability to communicate understanding of heat transfer/flow, thermal design considerations, electrical isolation considerations, design cost trade-offs/analysis, EMI considerations, design prototyping and design Reliability testing.
  • Ability to use and understand results from benchtop electronics design tools independently and safely (e.g., oscilloscope, signal generator, power analyzer, DVM, Surge and EMI generator, spectrum analyzer, Variac, illuminance flux/CCT measurement, RLC bridge, ESR meter, bench-top sphere and power quality measurement equipment).
  • Ability to demonstrate understanding and use of electronic component selection related to design, component tolerance stack-up analysis, component reliability analysis, simulation in computer circuit analysis tools and system considerations.
  • Ability to communicate some understanding of PCBA manufacturing, factory testing methods, component selection impacts, types of PCB materials and why/when each is used.
  • Ability to demonstrate LEAN & Six Sigma methodology and practices such as standard work, time study, cause & effect, A3, 5WHY and other tools of DMAIC.
  • Ability to clearly communicate verbally & written in English, sketches, engineering drawings, data collection and able to create and technical presentations to varied audiences.
  • Ability to collaborate and work effectively in cross-functional and cross-matrix team environments to enable high quality product designs and deliverables to be achieved on-time.
  • Ability to adapt personally and quickly to changes within Acuity, industry, engineering and other standard work activities which produce compliant designs and on-time deliverables enabling Acuity business metrics.
  • Understands applicable standards such as UL, DLC, and/or Energy Star standards and testing processes related to electronics and lighting products.
  • Physical ability to independently lift and manage products and loads up to 50 lbs.

Responsibilities

  • Provide independent product ideation, electronics hardware design, firmware creation/updates, LED selection, PCB design/layout creation, UV/Horticulture designs, PCBA drawing creation along with selection of drivers, surge protection devices, emergency battery backup equipment and luminaire electronic controls.
  • Prototype, test, and assemble prototypes/samples required for evaluating designs and cost reductions.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously while collaborating with cross-functional engineering members of the design team.
  • Teach and mentor other Electronics Engineers.
  • Engage with Focus Factory and Product Management to ensure successful and on-time product launch.
  • Apply LEAN Process methodology in project and daily tasks to streamline and improve processes.
  • Independently complete all Electronics design activities including selecting components, creating firmware solutions, and selecting drivers and controls for integrated light engine solutions.
  • Calculate parameters for schematic configurations and work with the Optics team to achieve lumen targets.
  • Develop and distribute engineering data including Engineering Change Notices, bills of material, drawings, PCB design/manufacturing files, test specifications, and parts tracking for product release.
  • Manage engineering documentation, ECRs, ECOs, DFMEA, calculations, and drawings using Acuity Product Life Management and Financial systems.
  • Design work includes new product development, product enhancements, cost reductions, and support for customers, Focus Factory, and Supply Chain.
  • Initiate and complete product design from project charters, specification matrices, customer experience matrices, and competitor sample reviews, ensuring compliance with Acuity DFx standards.
  • Manage projects and teach others how to utilize the Acuity Product Development System (PDS) to ensure timely completion of deliverables and high-quality designs.
  • Support ABS/LEAN Transformation by identifying/leading/participating in Kaizen events and completing post-Kaizen activities.
  • Lead process improvement activities for the Electronics & Light Engine team, developing and improving processes, testing, DFx, and documentation.
  • Submit photometry/thermal test requests and work with the testing group on follow-up.
  • Work with the mechanical design team to ensure samples submitted for testing are compliant.
  • Review functional specifications, project charters, competitor samples, and testing reports to ensure product compliance.
  • Complete luminaire product scaling activities to ensure accurate product specifications.
  • Travel as business situations dictate.
