Electrical Engineer Intern (Spring 2027)

Zipline•South San Francisco, CA
•Onsite

About The Position

Zipline is seeking an Electrical Engineer Intern to join its Electrical Engineering team for Spring 2027. The team designs, builds, and tests electronics and software for Zipline’s flight and ground systems, including custom circuit boards, end-of-line testers, sensor integration, flight control, and communication systems. It works with mechanical, test, embedded, software, and systems engineering teams to develop scalable products for autonomous delivery operations. The intern will be a full member of the team and will work with the team to identify projects aligned with their interests and the company’s priorities. Example projects include prototyping battery-charging electronics, architecting ground-support electronics, developing test equipment for design validation and production, supporting avionics validation campaigns, and investigating product issues found during testing, flight, or field operations. The internship is full-time and in person at Zipline’s South San Francisco or Dallas office, running from January through April or May 2027. The hourly rate is $44.

Requirements

  • Must have completed at least the second year of undergraduate studies; master’s and Ph.D. students are also eligible.
  • Experience designing and testing a custom circuit board.
  • Experience working on a project that moved under its own power, such as a plane, car, boat, quadcopter, rocket, balloon, submarine, or rover.
  • Collaborated with a group on the circuit-board and powered-project experience, through a school club, competition team, job, internship, or other group.
  • The application should include a work sample or a short note describing prior experience related to the listed qualifications.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior exposure to robotics systems, automation, or sensor data through coursework, projects, or clubs.
  • Exposure to object-oriented programming, such as C++ or Java.
  • Familiarity with cloud services such as AWS, GCP, or Azure, or big data tools such as Spark or Hadoop.

Responsibilities

  • Work on electrical engineering projects aligned with the intern’s goals and interests and the team’s and company’s priorities.
  • Potentially prototype battery-charging electronics for harsher environmental requirements.
  • Potentially architect ground-support electronics for air-vehicle takeoff and landing.
  • Potentially develop and deploy test equipment, such as end-of-line testers, for design validation and production.
  • Potentially support design-validation campaigns to verify avionics products meet design and reliability requirements.
  • Potentially investigate root causes of product issues identified through testing, flight, or field use.
  • Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, test, embedded, software, systems, manufacturing, operations, and field-support stakeholders as needed.

Benefits

  • Relocation support may be available.
  • Housing stipend may be available.
  • Overtime pay may be available.
  • Paid sick time may be available.
