About The Position

Akima Infrastructure Services, LLC (AIS) is seeking an Electrical Engineer specializing in Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) to join their staff augmentation team supporting the Department of Energy at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and the Pantex Plant in Amarillo, Texas. As an employee of AIS, you will contribute to Y-12's mission of ensuring a safe, secure, and reliable U.S. nuclear deterrent. While employed by AIS, you will take day-to-day direction from Y-12 staff. AIS provides pay, benefits, HR, and employment management. Qualified applicants must be US citizens, at least 18 years old, and able to meet pre-employment requirements including physicals, drug screens, and background investigations for Department of Energy clearance. This role involves developing high-quality detailed design packages, providing engineering procurement and field technical support, and offering expertise for troubleshooting and technical assessments of plant systems. The design work includes preparing conceptual engineering deliverables like cost-estimating bills of material, labor-hour estimates, statements of work, and design criteria. It also encompasses title II design engineering deliverables such as calculations, analyses, construction specifications and drawings, and equipment specifications. The engineer will work cooperatively as a team member within an integrated project team and will routinely perform walkdowns in existing plant facilities to generate design documents and provide field support to craft personnel. All electrical engineers will apply technical expertise with a primary focus on instrumentation/controls for equipment process control and monitoring, using established engineering practices, codes, and standards. Field troubleshooting of existing systems will be required to inform design for corrective actions. Specific deliverables include preparing conduit/cable schedules, conduit/equipment plans, one-line diagrams, wiring/connection/schematic diagrams, instrument loop diagrams, various sections/elevations/details, calculations, datasheets, and construction specifications. Design engineers will also develop control cabinet assembly drawings, system diagrams, and control logic for both batch and continuous processes using conventional analog instrumentation, distributed digital control systems, and PLCs/HMIs. They will also develop process control system narratives, assist in developing process software requirements, and provide input to P&IDs. This is a full-time position with a 4/10 schedule (Monday-Thursday).

Requirements

  • US citizen, at least 18 years of age
  • Able to meet pre-employment requirements including any required physicals, drug screen, and/or background investigation to satisfy clearance requirements from the Department of Energy
  • ABET accredited Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering with 10-14 years of experience or a MS with 10-13 years of experience
  • > 5 years instrumentation and controls design experience
  • Ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance
  • Demonstrated experience utilizing the National Electrical Code, UL508A, and relevant ISA standards to design instrumentation and controls systems
  • Pre-employment Drug Screen
  • Medical Exam(s)
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy
  • Participation in an ongoing random drug testing program (if applicable)

Nice To Haves

  • DOE Q-Clearance is highly desired but not required to start work
  • Experience utilizing Rockwell Automation industrial automation software (RSLogix, FactoryTalk View, etc.) is preferred, but not required
  • A Professional Engineering License (PE) is preferred but not required

  • Field troubleshooting support of existing systems to inform design for corrective actions
  • Preparing conduit/cable schedules, conduit/equipment plans, one-line diagrams, wiring/connection/schematic diagrams, instrument loop diagrams, various sections/elevations/details, calculations, datasheets, and construction specifications
  • Developing control cabinet assembly drawings, system diagrams, and control logic for both batch and continuous processes using conventional analog instrumentation, distributed digital control systems, and programmable logic controller/human-machine interfaces (PLCs/HMIs)
  • Developing process control system narratives
  • Aiding in the development of process software requirements
  • Providing input to Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)
