About The Position

This role provides engineering and technical support services for the design, construction, and operation of CenterPoint Energy's overhead and underground distribution system. The engineer will review and analyze customer-submitted site plans, structural drawings, electric one-lines, schematics, and equipment specifications. They will use electrical models (CYMDIST) to analyze circuit loading, identify operating issues, and make recommendations for system reliability and operations. The position also involves administrative tasks for electrical design applications, acquiring knowledge of distribution design standards, gathering data from various sources (SAP, G.I.S., Distribution Accounts, Service Centers) to build electrical models, and reviewing Distribution Development Plan documents. Additionally, the role includes performing studies for DER interconnection requests and special studies, providing expertise to enhance distribution planning techniques, analyzing technical data to propose solutions, evaluating new technologies, improving engineering processes, participating in various work groups and organizations, and managing multiple projects involving customers, contractors, and internal departments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of two years of electric utility or power engineering experience that includes performing engineering calculations and design.
  • Able to use mathematics, including trigonometry and calculus, to complete complex engineering design calculations and relate mathematical solutions to actual utility situations.
  • Able to interpret, analyze and produce electrical models, drawings, and technical documents.
  • Able to apply knowledge of electrical theory and system operations to daily decisions.
  • Able to communicate either written and verbal communications either in person or through technical equipment such as telephone.
  • Able to demonstrate and apply the manual dexterity to operate a personal computer and common office equipment.
  • Able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a minimal amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
  • Able to sit, stand or walk for long periods of time.
  • Able to certify and use personal protective equipment, such as respirator, safety glasses, hardhat, gloves, protective footwear and earplugs on a daily basis.
  • Able to operate a motor vehicle and drive a motor vehicle daily or for extended time periods, in a safe manner, and enter/exit vehicle unassisted.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with CYME or other power flow modeling software, as well as Python, is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Review and analyze customer submitted site plans, structural drawings, electric one-lines, schematics, and equipment specifications.
  • Use electrical models (CYMDIST) to analyze circuit loading, identify operating issues, and make reliability and operational recommendations for the distribution system.
  • Perform administrative tasks to support electrical design applications.
  • Acquire basic knowledge of distribution design standards and design criteria.
  • Gather information and compile data from multiple sources (SAP, G.I.S., Distribution Accounts, Service Centers, etc.) to construct electrical models and make recommendations.
  • Review Distribution Development Plan documents and associated reports (construction lists, loading reports, detail drawings/sketches, etc.).
  • Perform studies to analyze and respond to DER interconnection requests, special studies, and other inquiries.
  • Provide expertise to improve and enhance distribution planning techniques, standards, and procedures.
  • Perform analysis of technical data, identify problems, and propose alternative solutions.
  • Evaluate new technologies that will enhance the electric distribution system.
  • Improve and enhance engineering processes and procedures.
  • Participate on task forces, user groups, inter-utility work groups, and professional organizations.
  • Gather and analyze data, perform engineering studies, prepare written reports, give oral presentations related to distribution systems.
  • Manage multiple projects involving customers, contractors, and internal departments.
