About The Position

Provide electrical engineering support for on-going transmission and distribution, water, technical services, generation, and telecommunication projects. Work with internal and external customers to provide engineering guidance and administer contract responsibilities as needed. Work with other departments to schedule work as needed. This position has a level I and a level II grading based on experience and demonstrated abilities. Tasks are performed at each level based on the individual's knowledge and experience.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, power option preferred.
  • Electrical Engineer I is an entry-level engineering position.
  • Electrical Engineer II is a minimum 2 years electric utility transmission and distribution experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal codes and standards that govern work on the electric transmission and distribution system, such as NESC, NEC, NFPA, OSHA, NERC, MRO, and MISO procedures, and others as they pertain to specific problems encountered.
  • Working knowledge of, and the ability to stay current in, programming languages such as VBA.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and listening skills, with ability to build productive professional relationships and promote a team atmosphere.
  • Project management skills.
  • Good judgment and reasoning skills.
  • Problem identification, analysis, and solving.
  • Proficiency with use of Microsoft Office Word at an intermediate level and Excel at an advanced level.

  • Ability to work independently, effectively prioritize work, manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and adjust work priorities as needed to meet department/organizational objectives.
  • Ability to develop, read, and interpret drawings, schematics, specifications, and technical manuals.
  • Ability to distinguish colors.
  • Must be able to attend work on a regular basis and work extended hours as needed.
  • Must maintain a method of communication in order to be contacted by MPW outside normal work hours.

Nice To Haves

  • Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Iowa beneficial for level II position, or working toward certification.
  • Familiarity with CAD and GIS preferred.
  • Proficiency with information retrieval from databases preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and coordinate current construction and maintenance projects.
  • Work with contractors and consultants.
  • Periodically review and update construction standards and practices.
  • Apply engineering principles to the evaluation and selection of planning alternatives.
  • Assist in the design and layout of electrical transmission and distribution lines.
  • Review work orders and coordinate work as necessary.
  • Assist in the coordination, interpretation, and preparation of electrical transmission and distribution system studies, computer models, load flow analyses, and short circuit studies.
  • Coordinate engineering activities with industrial and commercial customers, including MPW policy, technical details (including power factor and harmonics), and general assistance with electric service installations.
  • Assist in writing and evaluating major equipment specifications and contracts, including transformer and cable specifications.
  • Contracts include pole attachment agreements, easements, and franchise agreements.
  • Support utility arc flash studies and supply data for customer studies.
  • Assist Chief Operations Engineer with technical problems related to the operation and maintenance of electrical transmission and distribution, water, technical services, generation, and telecommunications systems.
  • Assist Planning Engineer in running and analyzing compliance studies for NERC, MRO, and MISO.
  • Assist with overall system reliability improvement efforts, including the development, population, and use of databases used to track failure, maintenance, and outage issues.
  • Assist in the development of the annual operating budget and appropriate projections for the department.
  • Other duties as assigned.
