About The Position

Responsible to the assigned supervisor for performing entry level engineering work activities and projects requiring the application of engineering knowledge in a safe, effective, efficient and economic accomplishment of assigned objectives. This role involves applying theory to solve well-defined problems or provide analysis, with guidance from higher-level engineers. The position requires assisting higher-level engineers, gaining familiarity with relevant standards, codes, regulations, equipment, materials, systems, and business processes. A fundamental understanding of power systems, including generation, transmission, distribution, and protection systems, as well as knowledge of SCADA and state estimation tools, is necessary. The role also involves coordinating work activities, preparing cost estimates, monitoring project status, and supporting real-time situations. Effective communication, interpersonal skills, and decision-making abilities are essential, along with an attitude of customer focus and an understanding of economic analysis techniques and environmental protection.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering in a program accredited by ABET (for SG6).
  • Knowledge of power system including substation equipment and protective relaying devices (for SG6).
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering in a program accredited by ABET along with two (2) or more years of related engineering experience (for SG7).
  • Knowledge of power flow and simulations (for SG7).
  • Familiarity with contingency analysis and identifying solutions to contingencies (for SG7).
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering in a program accredited by ABET along with 4 or more years of related engineering experience; OR 2 years of related engineering experience along with a master’s degree or PhD in engineering from a program accredited by ABET (for SG8).
  • Experience using power flow simulations and state estimation tools (for SG8).
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering in a program accredited by ABET along with 8 or more years of related engineering experience; OR 6 years of related engineering experience along with a master’s or PhD in engineering from an ABET accredited program (for SG9).
  • Electrical Engineers preferred for this role.

Nice To Haves

  • Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering examination in preparation for future licensing as a Professional Engineer (PE) is encouraged and preferred (for SG6).
  • Individuals with a master’s degree in engineering from an engineering program accredited by ABET may be considered for entry into the organization at SG7 level.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in any U.S. state or Puerto Rico is encouraged and preferred (for SG8).
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in any U.S. state or Puerto Rico is preferred for this position unless approval to waive this requirement is given by the organization's EVP (for SG9).
  • Acceptable Alternative for SG9: Bachelor's degree in engineering (non-ABET) plus a master’s degree or PhD in engineering from a university with an ABET accredited bachelor’s program.
  • Confirmation is required to ensure the PE obtained in Puerto Rico aligns with NCEES standards.
  • Individuals with a bachelor’s degree in engineering technology can satisfy this degree requirement, if they obtain a certified Professional Engineering (PE) license.
  • VP or above may waive the requirement for a degree from a university with a non-ABET accredited program.

Responsibilities

  • Perform entry-level engineering work activities and projects requiring the application of engineering knowledge.
  • Assist higher-level engineers in handling well-defined portions of more complex problems and analyses.
  • Gain familiarity with standards, codes, regulations, pertinent equipment, materials, systems, and business processes.
  • Coordinate work activities of others as required to resolve routine engineering tasks.
  • Monitor project status and recommend action accordingly.
  • Prepare cost estimates using established standards.
  • Develop understanding of the workflow for routine engineering projects.
  • Accomplish work according to plans and schedules established by higher-level employees.
  • Actively seek out information and understanding of engineering problems and solution techniques applicable to area of responsibility.
  • Apply basic techniques to perform analysis associated with the resolution of routine technical problems.
  • Use initiative in looking for opportunities and presenting new ideas and new approaches.
  • Provide support during real-time situations.
  • Assist and participate in the preparation of reports and technical papers.
  • Network with peers to share information and encourage cooperation.
  • Make routine decisions subject to review and contribute to team decision-making.
  • Apply economic analysis techniques in problem solving.
  • Pursue effective ways to protect and enhance the environment while providing reliable electricity at a competitive cost.
