About The Position

The Electrical Engineer – Electric Generation supports the safe, reliable operation of generating station electrical systems by designing, maintaining, testing, and troubleshooting protective relaying, controls, and station equipment. This role leads and/or supports electrical upgrades and testing programs, coordinates with Operations and Maintenance, contractors, and outage schedules, and ensures required compliance activities (including applicable NERC/FERC testing and documentation) are completed. This position is posted as a five-level job family (Associate Engineer through Senior Engineer); the successful candidate will be placed at the level that best aligns with their education, experience, and demonstrated qualifications.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain safety as the primary consideration in planning and executing all work, testing, and projects.
  • Develop and apply protective relaying and control schemes: originate/update relaying schematics, follow established design control logic, and ensure compliance with proper relaying practices and NIPSCO standards.
  • Review designs and support field execution: verify drawings and field wiring; provide on-site engineering support and direction to operations, maintenance, construction, and contractors to ensure equipment is installed and operates as intended.
  • Perform and/or direct commissioning and maintenance testing: acceptance, calibration, functional testing, final load checks, and periodic inspections/maintenance of protective relays, control systems, and major station electrical equipment (e.g., transformers, breakers, generators, motors, instrument transformers, regulators, CTs/PTs, inverters/UPS, batteries, chargers).
  • Maintain station monitoring and condition-assessment capabilities including DFR/SER equipment and infrared scans; analyze results, identify emerging issues, and recommend/track mitigations.
  • Troubleshoot protective relaying/control schemes and station equipment; respond to trouble calls and provide after-hours support as needed to restore reliable operation.
  • Lead projects as Project Manager/Technical Lead: define scope, develop proposals/specifications, develop schedules and cost estimates, manage budgets/forecasts, support bid evaluation, administer contracts, procure materials, coordinate multi-craft work in a union environment, and oversee inspection/testing and closeout documentation.
  • Drive reliability and performance improvement: investigate equipment and O&M practices impacting reliability/availability/efficiency/cost/safety/environmental compliance; perform root cause analysis; implement cost-effective corrective actions; develop monitoring programs and evaluate operating/PM trends to verify results.
  • Ensure compliance and records management: review work for adherence to engineering standards/codes; plan and execute work during planned/unplanned outages including required NERC/FERC testing; document test data and maintain current electrical prints and schematics.
  • Provide technical assistance across Generation and coach/mentor operations and maintenance personnel to improve technical capability, repair quality, and test/documentation practices.
  • Lead, perform and properly document, all mandated NERC/FERC testing.
