About The Position

Stantec's Buildings team is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer / Project Designer to join their mission of becoming the world's leading integrated design practice. This role involves working as part of a larger project team under the guidance of a Lead Engineer/Designer, focusing on the evaluation, selection, specification, and engineering of electrical power, lighting, fire alarm, and other low voltage systems. The position requires ensuring compliance with applicable codes and internal engineering standards, and may involve Revit and AutoCAD design, calculations, and field work. The role can be located in various Stantec Buildings Northeast Engineering offices.

Requirements

  • Thorough understanding of electrical engineering concepts and ability to communicate ideas effectively.
  • Solid understanding of power distribution systems, lighting systems, and low voltage systems for the built environment.
  • Experience in the construction industry and/or in-depth knowledge of construction processes, including construction administration roles.
  • Strong understanding of all phases of project document production and the relationship between drawings and specifications.
  • Ability to apply sustainable design principles within projects.
  • Ability to integrate design elements with other disciplines.
  • Knowledge of applicable codes and standards such as NFPA Standards, International Building Codes and Applicable Energy Codes.
  • Strong client communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to participate on multiple overlapping projects and design teams while maintaining project execution and schedule.
  • Ability to recognize when technical problems are developing and initiate appropriate corrective actions.
  • Ability to check work of others for accuracy and completeness and manage time to meet project budget and schedule.
  • Ability to give direction, follow process, and give feedback and suggestions to Junior Engineers and Designers.
  • Ability to participate and collaborate in project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought.
  • Ability to develop sketches, drawings, building program and other similar material for use by Junior Engineers and Designers.
  • Ability to produce calculations based on project specific parameters, such as load calculations, short circuit studies, and lighting calculations.
  • Ability to produce reports and studies as well as interpret the findings of reports or studies prepared by others.
  • Ability to produce project specific technical specifications independently from an industry or office standard master specification.
  • Working knowledge of Revit and AutoCAD, and the use of it as a drafting/design tool.
  • Understanding of Microsoft Office Suite.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with AGI 32, SKM, Newforma is advantageous.
  • Working knowledge of low voltage systems such as telecommunications, security and fire alarm is advantageous but not required.
  • Experience in healthcare, laboratory and industrial facilities is advantageous but not required.
  • Professional Engineering license is not required but pursuance of future licensure is encouraged.
  • LEED Green Associate or LEED AP preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Creates electrical design documentation using Revit/AutoCAD and directs junior staff.
  • Provides supervision and mentorship to assigned staff to develop their skills and career goals.
  • Leads the development of designs through calculations, models, and diagrams.
  • Prepares and reviews project documentation, including site plans, floor plans, diagrams, and details.
  • Coordinates with other building disciplines to ensure design compatibility.
  • Performs advanced calculations for building elements and electrical systems and reviews results from others.
  • Conducts field work to assess existing conditions for design development and to review contractor work.
  • Leads engineering construction administration duties, including shop drawing review, RFI responses, and site observation reports.
  • Leads the evaluation and selection of building electrical systems and materials, and develops specifications.
  • Attends project coordination meetings.
  • Participates in value engineering and basic cost estimating.
  • Applies technical expertise and leads cross-functional resources to meet project requirements.
  • Provides client consultation and nurtures client relationships.
  • Acts as a technical resource for staff and trains junior staff on software, codes, and design processes.
  • Maintains current knowledge of relevant technologies and trends.
  • Implements sustainable design principles into building designs.
