About The Position

GFT is seeking a motivated an Electrical Designer to join our Transit & Rail Systems team. This position provides an excellent opportunity for recent graduates and early-career professionals to develop technical expertise while supporting the planning, design, and delivery of complex transit and rail projects across North America. The successful candidate will work alongside experienced engineers and subject matter experts on projects involving rail systems, traction power, communications, signaling, train control, station electrical systems, intelligent transportation systems (ITS), and Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) technologies. The role offers hands-on experience in engineering design, systems integration, field investigations, and project delivery.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant engineering experience.
  • Strong interest in transit, rail, transportation, and infrastructure systems.
  • Knowledge of electrical engineering fundamentals and design principles.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally for project assignments and field work.

Nice To Haves

  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or ability to obtain within 12 months.
  • Internship or co-op experience in transportation, rail, electrical, or infrastructure engineering.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, MicroStation, Revit, or similar engineering software.
  • Exposure to power systems, communications, controls, or transportation technologies.
  • Interest in pursuing a Professional Engineer (P.E.) license.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the design and analysis of electrical and systems infrastructure for transit and rail projects.
  • Support the development of plans, specifications, calculations, and technical reports.
  • Participate in the design of traction power, station electrical systems, communications, signaling, train control, and transit technology systems.
  • Assist with systems integration and interface coordination among multiple engineering disciplines.
  • Support field investigations, site assessments, and data collection activities.
  • Assist project teams in preparing engineering deliverables on schedule and within budget.
  • Participate in design reviews and quality control processes.
  • Support compliance with applicable industry standards, client requirements, FTA, FRA, IEEE, NEC, and AREMA guidelines.
  • Maintain project documentation and support configuration management processes.
  • Work under the guidance of senior engineers and technical leads.
  • Participate in mentorship and training programs.
  • Pursue Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification and professional growth opportunities.
  • Develop technical knowledge of transit and rail systems engineering practices.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams including civil, structural, mechanical, track, operations, and planning professionals.
  • Support client meetings, workshops, and stakeholder coordination efforts.
  • Assist with technical presentations, proposals, and business development activities as assigned.
