About The Position

The Electrical Designer III is an experienced electrical design professional who leads significant portions of electrical design and documentation for projects on hospital and college campuses. The position requires sound technical judgment, strong production capability, and direct coordination with internal disciplines, vendors, contractors, and project leadership. The designer independently develops solutions for assigned systems, supports project planning, mentors junior staff, and contributes to design quality, coordination, and constructability. The role operates with moderate independence under the direction of a Senior Designer, Professional Engineer, Design Manager, or Design Director, and may provide day-to-day guidance to junior designers. The role supports electrical design for commercial, institutional, healthcare, campus, and similar building projects, including power distribution, emergency power, lighting, grounding, low-voltage systems, and renewable and distributed energy systems. Work may include BIM coordination, construction administration, field activities, project planning, and development of technical documentation and deliverables. Travel to job sites or office locations is expected for 10–25% of the time.

Requirements

  • Associate degree or higher in architectural engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field, or 4–6 years of design experience in lieu of a degree.
  • At least 5 years of experience with building construction, especially mechanical, electrical, plumbing, automatic temperature control systems, and/or testing, adjusting, and balancing.
  • Strong working knowledge of electrical systems for commercial, institutional, healthcare, campus, or similar building types.
  • Ability to develop coordinated design documents with limited supervision.
  • Familiarity with the National Electrical Code (NEC), applicable building and energy codes, lighting control systems, and industry best practices.
  • Ability to mentor Designer I and Designer II staff.
  • Strong Revit/BIM skills, including model coordination and documentation management.
  • Ability to communicate directly and professionally with project team members.
  • Developing ability to understand project budgets, schedules, deliverables, and staffing needs.
  • Ability to travel to job sites or office locations 10–25% of the time.
  • Ability to meet the stated physical and work-environment demands, including climbing and working in confined spaces, operating machinery or power tools, exposure to outdoor weather and noise, and moving objects weighing 20–100 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Engineer-in-Training certification.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design and documentation for assigned electrical systems, project areas, or complete project packages.
  • Assist with design of solar energy, battery energy storage, fuel cell, renewable energy, microgrid, distributed energy, and combined heat and power systems.
  • Develop coordinated power distribution, emergency power, one-line diagrams, panel schedules, lighting, grounding, and low-voltage systems.
  • Perform and review electrical load calculations, feeder sizing, panelboard sizing, voltage-drop calculations, and basic short-circuit and coordination inputs.
  • Lay out normal power, emergency and standby systems, lighting controls, and low-voltage system pathways; support specification and construction of modular construction elements as applicable.
  • Coordinate designs with architectural, structural, mechanical, plumbing, controls, and specialty disciplines.
  • Participate in and potentially lead BIM coordination, clash resolution, design workshops, and interdisciplinary coordination meetings.
  • Conduct and direct field operation of 3D laser scanning equipment as applicable.
  • Review Designer I and Designer II work for drafting quality, model organization, and technical accuracy.
  • Support development of specifications, narratives, cost opinions, phasing plans, technical studies, and design deliverables.
  • Participate in construction administration, including review of submittals, RFIs, field reports, and punch lists, issue resolution, and other project or construction team support as needed.
  • Identify design, coordination, constructability, and schedule risks and elevate concerns to project leadership.
  • Support adherence to client standards, regulatory requirements, and internal quality-control procedures.
  • Perform IT, telecom, and fire alarm design.
  • Select lighting fixtures and perform associated calculations.
  • Develop short-circuit and over-current protection models under direction from senior engineering staff.
  • Assist with project planning, resource management, and design workflow coordination.
  • Mentor junior designers and provide day-to-day guidance as applicable.
