About The Position

A Designer I is responsible for designing basic building systems, preparing technical documents and performing engineering calculations in coordination with project teams. This role involves drafting and design, including performing calculations and designing basic engineering systems in collaboration with experienced design staff. The designer will prepare system layouts, detailed drawings and schematics, review shop drawings for conformance to plans and specifications, and prepare or modify reports, plans, and designs for projects. Additionally, the Designer I will act as a mentor to less experienced designers. The position also supports business development activities, participates in client and industry events, and fosters a client-centric mindset. Responsibilities include communicating with clients for requirements and scope of work, supporting client and architect questions, and occasionally visiting job sites to verify existing conditions and observe construction progress. Continuous learning and development are emphasized, requiring the identification and filling of knowledge gaps, maintaining proficiency in common industry software like Revit, Bluebeam Revu, and Microsoft Office products, and researching new products, industry trends, and evolving codes and standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field of engineering (i.e.: mechanical, electrical, fire protection or architectural) and 1 year of relevant experience or 4 years of experience with high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Basic proficiency in engineering design: basic knowledge of the A&E industry, codes, design guides and standards.
  • High technical aptitude: ability to learn, understand and utilize various systems and processes.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate with all levels in a clear and concise manner.
  • Effective critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Team oriented and willingness and ability to function in a highly collaborative environment, in group projects and leading less experienced designers.
  • Ability to receive constructive feedback and adjust to coaching.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite and engineering design software applicable to your discipline or focus.
  • Must demonstrate proficiency in all core competencies as described and characterized in this job description.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam preferred.
  • Additional certifications and accreditations aligned with the relevant technical field (e.g., BEMP, CPD, CDP, NICET, RCDD, etc.) preferred.
  • Proficiency with Revit and Bluebeam Revu preferred.
