Electrical Design Engineer, Power Electronics

Mind Robotics•Palo Alto, CA

About The Position

Mind Robotics is building Physical AI for real-world industrial deployment, beginning on the factory floor. The company seeks people passionate about robotics, ownership, and solving difficult problems through hands-on work with the physical world. As Power Electronics Engineer, you will own the robot’s power architecture end to end, from distributing power to compute, sensing, actuation, and peripheral loads to designing motor inverters for the robot’s joints. Other teams will build against the power specifications and interfaces you define, so your decisions will influence the broader robot program. You will make architectural and supplier decisions, establish design standards for other hardware teams, and remain hands-on through schematic design, bring-up, and validation.

Requirements

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Experience owning a product’s power architecture—not only individual boards—that other teams built against.
  • Deep expertise in either power distribution or inverter power stages, with architecture decisions spanning both.
  • Strong DC-DC design skills, including topology, magnetics, and loop compensation, as well as current sensing and protection circuits.
  • Strong high-current layout, EMI/EMC, bring-up, and measurement skills, including double-pulse testing and gate-drive characterization.
  • Experience with harnesses, connectors, volume manufacturing, and contract manufacturers.
  • Experience establishing design standards adopted beyond one’s own team.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with EtherCAT.
  • Experience with GaN or SiC.

Responsibilities

  • Own the robot’s end-to-end power architecture, including distribution for compute, actuation, sensing, and peripherals, as well as motor inverters.
  • Define rail budgets and interfaces for compute, actuation, controls, and systems teams, accounting for their schedules.
  • Set priorities and make tradeoffs against power density, thermal, cost, and reliability targets, and explain those tradeoffs to program leads.
  • Make strategic decisions on topology, Si/GaN/SiC device technology, make-versus-buy, and supplier strategy; commit power specifications and dates to the program.
  • Establish power design standards covering derating, layout, EMI, protection, and validation for adoption by other hardware teams.
  • Lead cross-team design reviews and mentor engineers.
  • Design and develop distribution networks, inverter stages with discrete gate drivers, DC-DC conversion, current sensing, and protection.
  • Deliver high power density within thermal constraints, from PCB design through bring-up, validation, and fault injection.
  • Own power-related firmware and telemetry interfaces, including EtherCAT, PMBus, I2C, and SPI, as well as connectors and pinouts.
  • Manage fabricators and suppliers to support delivery, design for manufacturability, and second sourcing.
