About The Position

ISL is seeking a Professional Engineer or Professional Technologist with an electrical background for its Electrical and Automation practice. This role is ideal for someone with strong consulting or industrial experience who wants to contribute to the growth of ISL's Electrical and Automation team. ISL is a company of over 600 employees dedicated to delivering infrastructure projects that benefit the community while minimizing environmental impact. The Electrical and Automation team supports projects across Western Canada, focusing on municipal water, wastewater, stormwater, pump stations, lift stations, reservoirs, treatment facilities, standby power, instrumentation, controls, and automation. The team supports projects from concept through design, construction support, commissioning, startup, and operations support. ISL is involved in a variety of multidisciplinary projects across five sectors: Transportation, Municipal and Community, Bridges, Building and Structures, and Land and Environment. Requirements

  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or Professional Technologist (P.Tech. (Eng.)) designation in Alberta or British Columbia, or eligibility for registration with APEGA or EGBC or equivalent.
  • Degree or diploma in electrical engineering from an accredited post-secondary institution.
  • Approximately 5 to 10 years of progressive experience in electrical engineering, controls engineering, instrumentation, or related field.
  • Experience preparing or coordinating electrical design deliverables, including drawings, specifications, reports, cost estimates, technical memoranda, and construction documents.
  • Working knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code and applicable electrical design standards.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with a practical, client-focused approach.
  • Ability to travel for site reviews, field investigations, construction support, commissioning, and client meetings.
  • Ability to work with multidisciplinary teams and manage multiple priorities across active projects.
  • Experience with AutoCAD or other design tools used to support electrical, controls, or automation design.
  • Understanding that successful project work depends on strong collaboration, clear communication, quality, responsiveness, and client service.
  • Interest in growing a career that integrates electrical design, controls, operator interfaces, communication networks, commissioning, and operations.

Nice To Haves

  • Consulting engineering experience is preferred.
  • Programming/configuration experience with platforms such as Rockwell Automation, Schneider Electric, Siemens, Omron, GE, Emerson, Ignition, VTScada or Wonderware.
  • Project management experience.
  • Experience with municipal water, wastewater, stormwater, pump stations, lift stations, reservoirs, treatment facilities, or industrial process systems.
  • Exposure to systems integration, control narratives, alarm strategies, historian configuration, data logging, trending, operator interface design, operator training, or commissioning of automated systems.
  • Passion for programming experience and worked with automation platforms.
  • Experience with PLCs, HMIs, SCADA systems, historians, alarm notification systems, communication networks, or systems integration platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Support and lead electrical, instrumentation, and controls design for infrastructure projects.
  • Develop drawings, specifications, design memoranda, cost estimates, procurement documents, and technical reports.
  • Prepare and coordinate electrical, instrumentation, and controls design packages.
  • Design systems for power distribution, motor controls, MCCs, VFDs, generators, ATS equipment, lighting, instrumentation, PLC panels, communication networks, and related systems.
  • Support construction administration, shop drawing reviews, RFIs, site reviews, commissioning, startup, operator training, and deficiency resolution.
  • Coordinate with clients, owners, operators, contractors, OEMs, system integrators, and internal project teams.
  • Use ISL quality procedures to check work, document decisions, and support consistent technical delivery.
  • Support proposals, scopes of work, fee estimates, and responses to RFPs when needed.
