Electrical & Controls Engineer-in-Training
About The Position
This is an exciting opportunity for a recent or soon-to-be electrical engineering graduate, or an early-career Engineer-in-Training based in Edmonton, Calgary, Langley, or Burnaby. The role offers the chance to build a well-rounded engineering career while gaining practical experience across electrical design, controls, automation, construction, and commissioning. The successful candidate will contribute to meaningful infrastructure projects while developing technical judgment, field awareness, and a collaborative mindset needed to deliver solutions that work from design through operation. ISL is comprised of over 600 employees, including engineers, technologists, planners, and scientists, who collaborate on infrastructure projects that minimize environmental impacts and maximize community benefits. The Electrical and Automation team specifically supports infrastructure projects across Western Canada, with a focus on municipal water, wastewater, stormwater, pump stations, lift stations, reservoirs, treatment facilities, standby power, instrumentation, controls, and automation. The team is growing to support projects from concept through design, construction support, commissioning, startup, and operations support.
Requirements
- E.I.T. registration in Alberta or British Columbia, or eligibility for registration with APEGA or EGBC.
- Diploma or Degree in electrical engineering from an accredited post-secondary institution.
- Approximately 3 to 4 years of early career experience in electrical engineering, controls engineering, instrumentation, or drafting.
- Hands on AutoCAD drafting experience.
- Experience in electrical, instrumentation, and controls systems design.
- Ability to travel for site reviews, field investigations, construction support, commissioning, and client meetings.
Nice To Haves
- Programming or configuration experience with PLC, HMI, or SCADA platforms such as Rockwell Automation, Schneider Electric, Siemens, Omron, GE, Emerson, Ignition, VTScada, Wonderware, or similar systems.
- Ability to learn quickly, ask good questions, receive feedback, and apply standards consistently.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with a practical, team-oriented approach.
- Curious, detail-oriented, practical, and eager to learn.
- Interest in how electrical systems, control panels, field devices, PLCs, HMIs, SCADA systems, networks, alarms, data, and operators all connect.
- Experience, coursework, or interests may include electrical design, controls and automation, drafting, programming, configuration, testing, troubleshooting, field review, commissioning, or work on municipal, industrial, utility, process, or infrastructure projects.
- Exposure to programming, configuration, testing, commissioning, or troubleshooting on platforms such as Rockwell Automation, Schneider Electric, Siemens, Omron, GE, Emerson, Ignition, VTScada, Wonderware, or similar systems.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and revise AutoCAD drawings for electrical, instrumentation and controls systems.
- Support design of power distribution, motor controls, VFDs, standby power, instrumentation, PLC panels, communication networks and related systems.
- Assist with specifications, equipment schedules, cable schedules, I/O lists, control narratives, reports, cost estimates and technical memoranda.
- Participate in site visits, field investigations, construction support, commissioning, startup and deficiency reviews.
- Coordinate with engineers, CAD staff, project managers, vendors, system integrators, contractors and operators.
- Use ISL quality procedures and follow established document production workflows.
