Electrical & Controls Designer

EastmanKingsport, TN

About The Position

The Electrical & Instrumentation Design team sits at the intersection of electrical, controls, power, and instrumentation engineering, turning complex system requirements into constructable documentation that makes capital projects come to life in the field. This team owns a critical thread of almost every project — from the earliest design phases through commissioning — producing loop drawings, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, cable routing designs, and interconnection documentation that field crews and engineers depend on to bring industrial systems online safely and reliably. The Electrical & Controls Designer plays an important role in that work, supporting the development of detailed electrical, power, and control design deliverables that allow industrial systems to be installed, interconnected, and commissioned safely and effectively. For someone with a strong technical background in electrical and controls design who takes pride in translating design intent into clean, accurate documentation, this role offers the opportunity to contribute to multiple concurrent capital projects and make a meaningful impact on how Eastman builds and grows its facilities.

Requirements

  • Non-Engineering Technical Bachelor's Degree 3+ years of progressive experience in electrical design, control wiring, or instrumentation design, with demonstrated ownership of design deliverables.
  • Associate's Degree in Electrical or Instrumentation Technology or related program 5+ years of hands-on experience in electrical design, control wiring, or instrumentation design in industrial or capital project environments.
  • A strong project portfolio and demonstrated technical capability are essential at this level.
  • Control wiring and interconnection drawing development, including loop sheets, wiring diagrams, junction box layouts, and panel wiring.
  • Instrument and control panel design.
  • Cable and conduit design, including cable tray routing, cable sizing, and segregation of power, signal, and data circuits.
  • Grounding and shielding practices for instrumentation and signal wiring.
  • Electrical area classification and hazardous location wiring methods as they apply to field devices and control wiring.
  • Motor control centers, variable frequency drives, power distribution, heat tracing design, grounding, and lighting design.
  • Reading and interpreting P&IDs, instrument indexes, I/O lists, and cause-and-effect diagrams to drive physical wiring design.
  • Familiarity with relevant electrical and instrumentation standards, including NEC, NFPA 70, ISA-5.1, and ISA-TR20.00.01.
  • Experience with wiring design tools such as AutoCAD, EPLAN, or similar platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Developing and updating electrical and control design deliverables such as loop drawings, wiring diagrams, junction box layouts, panel wiring diagrams, cable schedules, and terminal block schedules.
  • Supporting instrument and control panel design, including instrument marshalling cabinets, field junction boxes, and terminal block layouts.
  • Coordinating with instrumentation, electrical, process, and control system engineers to ensure physical wiring design aligns with the overall control system architecture, without owning the programming or configuration scope.
  • Supporting the design of motor control centers, variable frequency drives, power distribution systems, heat tracing, grounding, and lighting systems as part of project execution.
  • Supporting electrical and controls design scope within capital projects through all phases — feasibility, FEED, detailed design, construction support, and commissioning.
  • Supporting construction and startup, resolving design questions from the field, and understanding how the design scope ties into overall project schedules and budgets.
  • Representing the design discipline clearly in project meetings.
  • Translating electrical and control system requirements into precise physical design documentation.
