This role involves shadowing an electrician, learning to read blueprints, diagnose and repair electrical problems, and assist with installing new electrical systems. The apprentice will support journeymen in the planning, layout, installation, testing, and repair of wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus, motors, equipment, and control systems in accordance with all applicable plans, specifications, codes, and industry standards.

Requirements

2001-4000 hours (1-2 years) of experience working as an electrician.
Basic knowledge of the electrical craft.
Developing knowledge in the installation or maintenance of electrical wiring, conduit, systems, equipment, and fixtures.
Ability to test electrical systems with appropriate tools.
Ability to understand and follow directions.
Must have all necessary tools (see Electrician helper tool list).
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Ability to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (criminal/civil background check, drug screen, motor vehicle records search).
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers and fractions rapidly and accurately.
Ability to listen to co-workers’ suggestions, safety concerns, and recommendations giving full attention to what they are saying and take the time to understand the points being made, asking questions and providing feedback when appropriate.
Ability to coordinate work with other crafts and co-workers on the job.
Ability to produce quality work, meeting requirements of plans, specifications and industry standards.
Ability to learn to read and understand plans and specifications.
Ability to visualize two dimensional drawings in three dimensions.
Ability to assist in the storage, planning and lay-out of materials in accordance with those plans and specifications.
Ability to assist journeymen in laying out work and learn to perform layout independently.
Ability to learn to observe functioning of installed equipment or systems to determine hazards and need for adjustments, relocation, or replacement.
Ability to notify supervision of any hazards observed and utilize safety stop work authority as needed.

Responsibilities

Assist a journeyman electrician and follow instructions.
Learn to use appropriate hand and power tools to properly assist the electrician in performing duties, including measuring, cutting, and bending wire and conduit; drilling holes for wiring; pulling wiring through openings; and assisting in lifting, positioning, and fastening objects.
Perform minor repairs, such as replacing fuses, light sockets, bulbs, and switches.
Maintain tools and equipment and keep supplies and parts in order; disassemble, repair, and reassemble defective electrical equipment.
Load, transport, unload, and furnish electricians with materials, tools, equipment, and supplies.
Clean work area and restock supplies and materials as necessary.
Help install all other related items in accordance with applicable plans and specifications; perform other routine duties as directed by experienced craft workers.
Participate in all safety-related processes and programs, engage with the work team to ensure zero injuries, watch for hazards, report concerns, and use stop work authority if needed.
Report all accidents and near misses to supervisor and participate in the investigation process.
Participate in all pre-job work planning and safety discussions; identify and take corrective action for safety hazards.
Understand and respond appropriately to all safety hazards and warning devices.
Understand, support, and follow lockout/tag out procedures and attend site-specific training.
Follow established safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe and clean work environment.
Use effective verbal and written communication skills.
Add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers and fractions rapidly and accurately.
