This role involves shadowing an electrician, learning to read blueprints, diagnose and repair electrical problems, and assist with installing new electrical systems. The apprentice will support journeymen in the planning, layout, installation, testing, and repair of various electrical components and systems in accordance with industry standards and codes.

Requirements

  • 4001-6000 hours (2-3 years’) experience working as an electrician.
  • Basic knowledge of the electrical craft.
  • Developing knowledge in the installation or maintenance of electrical wiring, conduit, systems, equipment, and fixtures.
  • Familiarity with testing electrical systems using appropriate tools.
  • Familiarity with the National Electrical Code (NEC).
  • All necessary licenses for the jurisdiction in which the work is to be performed (if applicable).
  • Ability to understand and follow directions.
  • Must have all necessary tools (see Electrician helper tool list).
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Ability to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (criminal/civil background check, drug screen, motor vehicle records search).

Responsibilities

  • Assist a journeyman electrician and follow instructions.
  • Learn to use appropriate hand and power tools for tasks such as measuring, cutting, bending wire and conduit, drilling holes, pulling wiring, and fastening objects.
  • Perform minor electrical repairs like replacing fuses, light sockets, bulbs, and switches.
  • Maintain tools and equipment, keep supplies and parts organized, and disassemble, repair, and reassemble defective electrical equipment.
  • Load, transport, unload, and furnish electricians with necessary materials, tools, equipment, and supplies.
  • Clean work areas and restock supplies and materials.
  • Help install related items according to plans and specifications.
  • Perform other routine duties as directed by experienced craft workers.
  • Participate in all safety-related processes and programs, ensuring zero injuries.
  • Watch for hazards and report any concerns to a supervisor or safety professional.
  • Use stop work authority if necessary to resolve safety issues.
  • Report all accidents and near misses to a supervisor and participate in investigations.
  • Participate in pre-job work planning and safety discussions.
  • Identify and take corrective action for safety hazards.
  • Understand and respond appropriately to safety hazards and warning devices.
  • Understand, support, and follow lockout/tag out procedures.
  • Attend site-specific training and follow all outlined procedures.
  • Follow established safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe and clean work environment.
  • Use effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Perform basic arithmetic operations (add, subtract, multiply, divide whole numbers and fractions).
  • Listen to co-workers' suggestions, safety concerns, and recommendations, providing feedback when appropriate.
  • Coordinate work with other crafts and co-workers.
  • Actively participate in on-the-job training and mentoring opportunities.
  • Produce quality work meeting requirements of plans, specifications, and industry standards.
  • Learn to read and understand plans and specifications, visualizing two-dimensional drawings in three dimensions.
  • Assist in the storage, planning, and layout of materials.
  • Assist journeymen in laying out work and learn to perform layout independently.
  • Learn to observe the functioning of installed equipment or systems to determine hazards and need for adjustments, relocation, or replacement.
  • Notify supervision of any hazards observed and utilize safety stop work authority as needed.
